Stella Maris Academy

Commissioned by the Catholic Church,
the Stella Maris Academy community prepares lifelong learners who lead, love, and serve as Jesus taught -
transforming our world one student at a time.
Weekly Update: April 13, 2017
Registration for Current Families Closes April 21

If you have not already taken the time to register for the 2017-2018 school year, please do so before next Friday. The registration window open through Friday, April 21 does not require a registration deposit. After April 21, we will use the enrollment totals to establish the numbers of sections per grade (many classes already have enrollment for more than one section). Having registration numbers that accurately reflect our fall enrollment also enables us to make meaningful teacher placements, order supplies for next fall in a timely manner, plan for specialty electives, and effectively plan the logistics of our transition. Please contact your campus principal if you have any questions regarding the registration process.

Applications for Community Support Scholarships are due May 1. If you need any assistance with the application, contact your campus principal.

Stella Maris Academy S chool Colors & Mascot Nominations

Calling all imaginations! It is time to start thinking about school colors and a mascot for Stella Maris Academy. We will be accepting nominations and ideas now through April 21. Please use the link below to submit color and mascot ideas.

Consider the following guidelines when brainstorming ideas:
  1. Complement and/or accent the Stella Maris name, as well as the Catholic faith.
  2. Consider mascots and the colors of schools which Stella Maris may compete against.
  3. Be creative and have fun!
Nominations will be narrowed to two spirit concepts in early May, and students will then vote on their favorite.

Curriculum Review & Planning

Diocesan outcomes will continue to be taught in all curriculum areas with the use of multiple resources including textbooks. The Diocese is currently on a seven year curriculum adoption cycle with math as the next curriculum to be reviewed and adopted. A curriculum team with representatives from all campuses is being formed. Together, the diocesan schools review curriculum outcomes on a regular seven year cycle. This structured approach delineates the philosophy and outcomes that guide the learning experiences, instructional resources, and assessments that comprise our diocesan approach to curriculum. Additionally, it represents an articulation of what students should know and be able to do and supports teachers in knowing how to achieve these goals.

This past year we have been reviewing and updating world languages, physical education, music, technology, and math. The principals and teacher curriculum committees work together to complete a comprehensive review. The sequence of tasks include: philosophy review, identifying overarching outcomes that guide instruction, development of a coherent and articulated progression of skills from grade to grade, use of a framework for how the goals can be achieved, the implementation of new materials, reviewing of testing data, and the identification of resources and professional development needed for ongoing improvement. As we implement best practices, we strive for academic excellence.

The teachers will be working together on how best to implement the outcomes at the campus sites using the materials and resources that are already in use. Part of the decision-making will be determining if additional materials need to be purchased to support any identified gaps before the end of the school year. Flowing from our curriculum decisions, we will update report cards to provide more uniformity among the campuses. The principals recently decided that all campuses will use trimester reporting.

Furthermore, discussions are taking place to identify meaningful traditions from each campus that will be honored and carried forth in planning such as plays, musical programs, special field trips, and all signature pieces to which our students, teachers, and families have identified as important.
