A+ Computer Systems & Maintenance
The students in A+ Computer Systems and Maintenance worked this week to build Networking, RJ-45 Cables. The cable creation process isn't too challenging, but getting them to test and actually work is quite the challenge!

Freshmen Cohort
In Freshmen Cohort, the students embarked upon their third GoogleTime project for the year.  In this project the students had to create a plan to save the human race from the destruction of Earth by creating a colony on Mars!  The students incorporated research, planning, drawing, and budgeting for traveling to and building a Mars colony.  As part of this project, the students incorporated skills learned from the  Animal Farm  and Russian Revolution unit - a combination of English and World Cultures.  During these units, the students learned about propaganda techniques and worked with real-life examples.  They were required to create two pieces of propaganda for their Mars colony to convince people to participate whether it be scientists or the general population.
May 3 - Testing & Focus on Connections/Tours
The school day on Wednesday, May 3 will look different for all students:
  • No school for seniors
  • Students in grades 9-11 will attend school during the normal hours of 7:25 AM - 2:45 PM
  • Bus routes will run as normal before and after school
  • Lunch will be served as normal
No classes will be held. Instead, students will be engaged in other activities as described below.

Freshmen and Sophomores
All students in grades 9 and 10 will take the ACT Aspire. This is a state-required test that provides important information to the state, schools, and students. In addition providing schools with data to inform decisions about curriculum and instruction, the test predicts individual students' scores for the ACT taken in their junior year.

Parents of freshmen and sophomores will receive more information about the ACT Aspire via email in the next week.

Juniors
All juniors will participate in both local business/college tours as well as complete their Focus on Connections event. The Connections event is a personal finance simulation required for the Focus on Careers course and for graduation. Students will spend 2-3 hours in the Fieldhouse living a month based on their chosen occupational salary and life choices.

During the time opposite of the Connections Event, students will tour local businesses or colleges of their choice. Due to the time limitation we can only offer college tours to UW-Washington County and MPTC - West Bend.  We also have several local businesses that have volunteered to show students the many career opportunities available here in Washington County.

Focus On Connections

This year Hartford Union High School is once again seeking the assistance of local businesses and community members to continue the unique learning experience with our Focus on Connections event.  This event is required for all juniors to attend to simulate a month of financial responsibilities of their 27 year old self.  Our event is scheduled for May 3, 2017.

As a volunteer, you will play a key part in assisting our students with paying their monthly bills, and choosing appropriate entertainment based on their salary and budget.  If you, or someone you know, are interested in helping out please reply to Beth Hermann at 262-670-3200 ext. 208 or via email at beth.hermann@huhs.org

The date for this year's event is Wednesday, May 3, 2017.  The scheduled times for the event is 7:30 AM - 2:30 PM.  However, you should plan to arrive between 7:00 AM - 7:15 AM to check in at our Volunteer station.  If you cannot commit to a full day, that's fine.  We do offer a Shift A (7:00 AM - 10:30 AM) and Shift B (11:00 AM - 2:30 PM).  This information will be included in the follow up materials.

District Decision and Appeals Process
Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Community,

The District Administration has developed a District Decision and Appeals Process that we believe will help all of us strengthen our communication, and help students, staff, parents, and community navigate the District's system more easily.  The process was initially developed by your District Leadership Team, and then reviewed and endorsed by the Board of Education.  The District Leadership Team will continue to update the Process periodically.   A few, brief notes about the Process are in order.

  • Attached, you will find the Purposes and Guide for the Process.
  • Next, you will find the District Decision and Appeals Process.  The far left column, Areas, lists the items about which you may need to make a contact.  The remaining columns (Initial Contact, First Level Appeal, etc.) are the people you should contact - in order from left to right - to help you.  Please follow the order given.
  • The last page is the list of Descriptors/Definitions which define the terms used in the Areas (far left) column of the Process.  That should help, too.

Please let us know your thoughts and suggestions about how to improve the Process.  You should communicate with your Principal, Dan Dobner, or you may contact me directly...

Thank you for the support of our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Attila J. Weninger, Ph.D., Superintendent

Health Minute
Eggs are a great source for healthy protein, high vitamin D level yolks, and are lots of fun at holiday egg coloring time.  Eggs should have a "best if used by" date on them.  We are all guilty of keeping eggs longer than that date.  Here is a tip to know if your eggs are still healthy to eat:

First, place your eggs in a bowl and fill it with water to cover.
If your egg(s) lie on its side on the bottom of the bowl:  Your egg is still fresh.
If your egg sits upright, but is still resting on the bottom of the bowl:
Your egg is on the older side, but still good to go.
If your egg floats:
Your egg has expired, and could cause food poisoning if consumed.

Eggs which are at least one week from the store, but still in the "best by" dates, will be slightly easier to peel if they are a little older (so get your eggs to color a little before eye dyeing time.)  To tell if an egg is raw or cooked, spin it, uncooked eggs won't spin.   If you drop an egg on the floor, sprinkle salt on it for an easy clean-up.  A large egg contains only 70 calories and 5 grams of fat and is one of the purist forms of protein there is.  They are gluten free. The color of the shell has nothing to do with cholesterol, it is purely an indication of the color of the hen that laid the egg.  Studies now reveal that egg consumption does NOT contribute to an increase in heart disease as previously thought.  Plunge eggs into ice cold water after boiling to also make them easier to peel.

Student Services
ACT Testing
All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year.  Students can register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org . When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850.   Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test.   The test fee for the ACT is $42.50 and the ACT with writing is $58.50.   If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.
HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates. The test dates for the 2016-2017 school year are:

June 10, 2017

Note:   Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on February 28 (no cost to the student on February 28).  When considering whether or not to sign up to take the April 8 ACT, it may be best for students to take the February 28 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test based upon February results.

HARTFORD - The Orioles were a little upset about Tuesday night's seventh inning against Beaver Dam, in which Tim Kerrigan's club allowed 11 runs and fell, 15-0. So Hartford took it out on Sussex Hamilton on Wednesday The Orioles mashed 14 hits off Taylor Earing and Kerl Bohlmann and scored 11 runs in the first en route to a a 15-4, five-inning mercy-rule victory. The 11-run first saw Hartford (1-3) send 14 batters to the plate, hit two home runs and score five before an out was recorded.  Two big strikes before Earing recorded an out came via Cady Uttecht's two-run single and Chloe Hansen's three-run home run.  "We were just waiting for it to happen, and it finally happened and that's all that matters," said Uttecht, a sophomore catcher, of the big inning. Hartford previously scored 12 runs in its first three games, including 11 against Oconomowoc.  "It built up inside of us, and now it came out."  "Anything can change. Last night, we had trouble putting the bat on the ball, and it's a funny game," Kerrigan said. "Today, we came out and our bats were going, and the kids relaxed a little bit."  Click here to read full article
