Derelict Building Program
The Derelict Building Program offers Iowa communities of 5,000 or fewer residents' financial assistance to address neglected structures that have sat vacant for at least 6 months. The Program's main focus is landfill diversion through the recycling and reuse of building materials. Established in 2011, the program has assisted 56 communities, diverted over 35,000 tons of materials and saved over $1 million in landfill disposal costs.

FY18 application deadline is April 21, 2017 for applicants who are seeking funding assistance with conducting asbestos inspections, asbestos abatement, structural engineering analysis, phase I and phase II site assessments, building deconstruction and building renovation expenses.  Please contact Scott Flagg at Scott.Flagg@dnr.iowa.gov directly to request an application. Funding will be available on July 1, 2017 for FY18 projects.
