Engineering Services General Construction Update

Engineering Services has multiple construction projects planned for the upcoming 2017 construction season. Many of these projects will have minimal impact to the public, while others will be more substantial.

The best way to stay up-to-date with any and all construction information is to sign up for our new General Construction E-newsletter. This newsletter goes straight to your inbox on a weekly basis. Information such as road closures and project schedules can be found each week in these updates. To sign up visit our website at
cityofgp.com/engineering and look for our E-newsletter page !
Here is a brief overview of some of the projects that will be occurring around the City in 2017's construction season:

Capital Projects 2017
Capital projects are chosen each year as a result of multiple studies identifying areas of improvement among the City. These improvements aid in prolonging the life of existing infrastructure, promoting safety, reducing traffic congestion and handling current and future traffic volumes.

Road Rehabilitation and Overlay
Multiple roads throughout the city are chosen each year to receive upgrades that help to prolong the life of the road and revitalize their structure.

Sidewalk/Trail Replacement 2017
This program works to replace and repair sections of sidewalk throughout the City. Upgrades help to improve community connectivity and walkway quality.

New Sidewalk/Trail Installs 2017
Each year multiple locations are identified that can benefit from the installation of new sidewalks or trails. Walkways help to increase community connectivity and community recreation.

Road Improvements 2017
Road improvements are performed each year throughout various areas of the City which are no longer capable of handling the growing traffic volumes of the City. Improvements help to ensure the City's roadways are at the highest standards and are capable of handling an appropriate traffic volume.

Bridge Rehab
Each year multiple bridges are selected to receive upgrades or to be rebuilt. The Bridge Rehab Program works to prolong the life and increase the safety of all bridges, including pedestrian bridges.

New Traffic Signals
New traffic signals are being implemented this year to help traffic flow and meet current standards. Updated traffic lights are designed to be equipped with the City's Intelligent Traffic System.

68 Avenue Twinning & Eastbound Bridge Project Update

The final phases of the 68 Avenue Twinning & Eastbound Bridge Projects commence in spring 2017.

Stay Informed
The best way to stay up-to-date with all 68 Avenue construction information is to sign up for our new 68 Avenue Construction Weekly E-newsletter. Information such as road closures and project schedule can be found each week in this update.

Project Background
This project is designed to meet the demands of the increased traffic volume and insure that the infrastructure meets the servicing standards of the City of Grande Prairie.

The remaining work for the bridge portion of the project includes bridge deck joints installation, concrete deck water proofing, bridge approach, deck paving, light fixtures and landscaping.

The new bridge and road construction projects originally started in spring of 2016. This project resumed on March 27, 2017.

As part of the project's completion, the intersection of 100 St and 68 Ave will be lowered to allow for commercial truck heights and the installation of new storm lines and upgrades to the
existing ones. This part of the project will be completed in three phases:

Phase 1 is to be constructed from the bridge on 68 Ave. up to the intersection on 100 St. This phase includes pouring concrete and a bottom lift of asphalt. No traffic disruption along 68 Ave is expected.

Phase 2 follows along from the intersection at 68 Ave. and 100 St. and goes east along 68 Ave. and south along 100 St. Traffic traveling north and south along 100 St. is anticipated to be shut down at alternating times to accommodate construction work at the intersection. This phase includes concrete pouring and both bottom and top lifts of asphalt. No complete shut down of the intersection is expected.

Phase 3 takes place along the west bound lane on 68 Ave, leading up to the bridge. North and South traffic are planned to be closed to allow for completion. Detours and re-routing are planned during Phases 2 and 3. A pedestrian accommodation plan is being created in conjunction with traffic accommodation plans for the project.

The east and west traffic along 68 Ave will be maintained during construction. It is anticipated that there the intersection of 68 Ave and 100 Street will remain open at all times during construction.
