San Francisco Giants Update:
While the Giants were busy preparing for Opening Day in Arizona, a few players took time off with the team to represent Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, and Mark Melancon all helped the United States post a 6-2 overall record in the tournament. On Wednesday, the United States defeated Puerto Rico in the final by a score of 8-0, giving the U.S. its first WBC championship, while Puerto Rico matched its result from 2013. Crawford hit .385 for the tournament, knocking in a team-high six runs and appearing in all eight games. Posey hit a pair of homers in four game appearances, and Melancon pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning in the semifinal. The trio rejoined the Giants on Friday for the last week of Spring Training. The Giants start their regular season on Sunday, April 2 against the Diamondbacks, with their home opener at AT&T Park on Monday, April 10.

Oakland Athletics Update:
On Thursday manager Bob Melvin confirmed what many A's fans had been speculating since Sonny Gray was diagnosed with a lat strain in early March. Kendall Graveman will pitch for the A's on Opening Night against the Angels, a first in his career and an opportunity he views as, "One step forward." Melvin also announced that Sean Manaea and Jharel Cotton will be two and three in the rotation, respectively, while Gray is out of action with his injury. However, Gray's return may be sooner than originally expected. Oakland's ace was cleared to throw last Monday, a week earlier than projected, and is now on track to make his regular season debut in late April. The two final spots in the rotation are up for grabs, with Andrew Triggs, Jesse Hahn, and Raul Alcantara making their final cases during the last week of Spring Training. Melvin seems to be favoring Triggs out of the three at this point, but it remains to be seen which two will complete the rotation while Gray is out.

The NFL draft is where great teams are made and bad teams fail. The 2008 NFL draft was when my favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, failed and I saw it all happen live.
The NFL draft is my favorite time of the year. I take days off from work to watch every second of it and spend months going over mock drafts, hearing what the experts have to say, going over every possible trade that makes sense (so many teams make trades that do not make sense) and creating my very own mock drafts. It's like Christmas. Every team gets some presents and some get way better presents than others. Leading up to the 2008 draft I had a wish list of players I hoped the 49ers would be able to draft.
After the 2007 season the biggest need the 49ers had was an explosive, play-making wide receiver. Their best receiver was a tight end named Vernon Davis. Davis was still on the team and was one of the best tight ends in the league, but when a tight end is your best offensive weapon, you need help. The player I was coveting was DeSean Jackson, a wide receiver from Cal. He had blazing speed, and he electrified the field whenever he had the ball in his hands, either as a receiver or a kick returner. My dream draft pick was DeSean.
The Niners weren't picking until 29th, at the end of the first round, and I assumed he would be long gone before they could nab him. I expected him to go right in the middle of the first round, with many receiver-needy teams picking ahead of the 49ers and him being the best receiver in the draft (according to me). I was watching each pick with my best friend, Tony, who is a big-time Cal and Raiders fan. The Raiders were picking fourth overall, and DeSean was not good enough to go so high, so Tony hoped he stayed in the Bay Area and was selected by the Niners. As pick by pick went by, I expected to hear "DeSean Jackson, wide receiver from California" every time Roger Goodell stepped up to the podium to announce a team's pick.
Pick 20 goes by and I start to get a faint glimmer of hope that he will fall to pick 29 and be a 49er. Pick 26 is made and it's an offensive lineman. Pick 27 is made and it's a corner. Pick 28 comes and I swear I hold my breath for the entire 15 minutes before it's announced that the Seahawks select a defensive end. I start jumping up and down with excitement. The Niners are going to select DeSean Jackson!
I was visualizing DeSean wearing a 49ers jersey, breaking a punt return 80 yards for a touchdown as fans scream. I saw him getting past a corner and catching the ball in the end zone. It was going to be magnificent. Even Tony was excited and gave me a hug. As Goodell approaches the podium, I grin with anticipation. He opens the card and reads "Kentwan Balmer, defensive tackle, North Carolina."
The world crashes around me. I feel like I am going to throw up. I get dizzy and keep thinking it's a joke. My Raider-fan friend laughs as a Raider fan should when the Niners do something horrifically stupid. Everything I had read and studied suggested Kentwan Balmer should be a second- or third-round pick. He wasn't even a player at a position of great need. I was devastated.
My Raider-fan friend, being the good friend he truly was, suggested maybe the Niners would be able to draft DeSean in the second round. The Niners were picking eighth in that round and I just didn't believe it was possible. The first round ends and DeSean is still on the board. Oddly enough, not a single wide receiver has been picked in the first round. I couldn't remember the last time that happened. There was no way he'd last to the eighth pick. No way, no how.
Pick by pick continued to go by. Three wide receivers were selected before the Niners got to pick, and none were DeSean. I got excited again as the Seahawks picked a tight end with DeSean still on the board. Is this really possible? Are the Niners going to get the player I covet the most in the second round? How awesome is that? A dream scenario is unfolding. Hallelujah! This is going to be an epic draft. I can't believe it. Then, as if the world went dark and life no longer existed, the name Chilo Rachal is called. A guard from USC. This time my Raider-fan friend didn't laugh. He was at a loss for words and even emotion. He was in as big a state of shock as I was.
The rest of the draft is a blur. The Eagles drafted DeSean Jackson a few picks after the Niners passed on him. The Niners picked a few players that made little to no impact. DeSean was a playmaker the second he stepped on the field for the Eagles. He is flashy and he scores. He beats the New York Giants by picking up a punted ball no one thought he should have picked up and returns it to the house as time expires and wins the game. Amazing talent.
The 49ers would not have another winning season until 2011, when Jim Harbaugh was named head coach. None of the players from that draft remained on the team long enough to be coached by Jim. Even now the team lacks a player with DeSean's explosiveness, and they are still seeking it.
With so many draft choices and a loaded roster with few needs, this should be the year we finally get a receiver that DeSean was supposed to be. Christmas is less than a month away for me and I hope to get lots and lots of great presents instead of several lumps of coal. Hope springs eternal.

Hoops, Heroes and Villains

Today should be a national day of mourning for the architect of rock and roll, Chuck Berry, my hero, who passed away Saturday at the age of 90. The last couple of years have been particularly hard on us baby boomers, what with many of the cultural icons of our youth departing for greener pastures. Johnny B. Goode is playing that guitar like a ringin-a-bell at the pearly gates.
And I'd like to also give a shout-out to Greg Popovich -- the greatest coach of this era and possibly the most honest and courageous. He does not bow to anyone. Not to the league who fines him for justifiably resting his star players, not to the networks, who force him to undergo those embarrassing in-game interviews, and not to our president, who Popovich has no problem calling out.
But how about the Warriors? They are vulnerable, no longer the favorite to win it all, or even get out of the West. How quickly things can change. The national media is gloating. "They're done," they say gleefully.
When the team signed Durant there was an indignant roar levied at the Warriors, "You should be ashamed! You couldn't win it fair and square, so you had to load up with this guy. How weak!"
They became the villains, a target on their back for every team they play, for the refs, and for the suits in New York who continue to worship at the altar of LeBron.
There they were cruising along and then Durant's injury. It's their karma! Steph and Klay started missing wide-open threes -- lots of them. Were they tired? Injured? Psyched-out? Or are they burned out from the hype, the title drive in 2015, and the stress of last year's 73-win campaign, followed by the biggest meltdown in the history of the NBA -- engineered by the NBA. And maybe burned out from being the villains: the traitor (KD), the baby-faced Batman (Steph) and his trusty Robin (Klay), he of the prettiest jump shot since Jerry West--are now the bad guys. Lately the team has been letting the league know they are fed up with the lack of fouls called on Steph and the ridiculous technical fouls on Draymond Green. As another hero of mine, John McEnroe, liked to say, "You can't be serious!"
So combine all that with arguably the best player in the league going down and we're staring at a clock that says it's officially Nervous Time. The recent road trip fiasco showed us three things:
* Number one; the NBA is either brain-dead or has it in for the Warriors.
* Number two; that our deficiencies on -- and maybe off the court -- are in full view. When Andre Iguodala, one of the most intelligent players in the league, goes n-word twice and "I do whatever massa' says"-- even in jest, red flag appears.
* Number three? It's time to suck it up and get tough. This is where Matt Barnes comes in. All season my buddy Tom and I have been clamoring for the W's to get Barnes and we got our wish. Despite his checkered history, this guy is a gamer, a loyal teammate who will fight for whatever team he is on and now, once again, after nine years, he is a Warrior. Hero or villain? Either way, he's ours now. We believe.

So how did they respond when they came home after the road trip from hell? They laid an egg against a woeful 76er team until Draymond Green turned into Superman in the fourth quarter with a performance for the ages. He would not let his team lose. Is that what villains do? Is this the same Draymond who, absurdly, has become the de facto villain of the NBA? Or is he the hero who might just have saved the season?
His energy carried over to the Orlando game, a feel-good blowout the team sorely needed. But Milwaukee, a better team, was coming in and playing their best ball of the year under East Bay hero Jason Kidd.
So how did the W's do? After the first nine minutes they found themselves trailing a younger, taller Bucks team, 27-14. Once again it was the absence of rebounding and interior defense -- Nellie ball 4.0, where the big guys become invisible. Without Durant's defense, there is no rim protection and, consequently, no fast break offense. The Bucks front line was chewing up the Warriors. Zaza Pachulia is 6'10" but plays more like 6'5". He cannot jump and frequently misses layups.
And then all hell broke loose. The home team went on a 49-17 run over the last 15 minutes of the first half, locking up on defense and taking a 63-44 lead into the locker room. Fueled by great passing, veteran defense from the ageless Barnes, and an angry Curry, everyone got into the act. Steph -- who hates the word slump -- went off, bombing in a 32-footer and then an off-balance, hand-in-his-face trey right before the half. Poor Matthew Dellavedova, who got lit up by the MVP while his alma mater, Saint Mary's, was beaten by Steve Kerr's alma mater, Arizona.
The second half was more of the same. The Warriors won by 25, holding the Greek freak, Giannis Antetokounmpoo, to just nine points. The numbers tell the story: 60% from the field, 52% from deep, 30 assists to just a dozen turnovers. Klay had an efficient 21 points on 9-16. Javale McGee played well. Steph is finding his mojo: 28 points on 6-8 from downtown, and he sat out the final quarter. And Igoudala? In hindsight, perhaps he was just firing himself up after that Minnesota game, a frustrating loss where the Warriors got "homered" by the refs down the stretch, erasing what would have been the biggest comeback of the season. A road trip like that will fray anyone's nerves. But he was on fire tonight. Lately Andre has given his embattled team an infusion of defensive smarts, ballet-like offense and positive energy. Meanwhile, the Warriors are giving notice to the rest of the NBA that they are still an elite team. When you have three all-stars and a wily vet and a finals MVP, you're never out of it -- and they clearly aren't.
The Spurs lost Saturday to Memphis. Two and a half back. A week ago everyone was saying that home court is overrated. After this week, maybe it's not. Who is the underdog now? More to the point, who are the heroes? Who are the villains? Bring on Westbrook, Harden, Gasol, and the Spurs.
