SLUGGISH GLOBAL GROWTH, at around 80% of pre-financial crisis levels, has been dubbed the New Normal. Deloitte's weekly briefing reports a glimmer of hope saying: "Synchronised global recovery is strengthening in developed and emerging markets for the first time since 2010.... The central challenge is to combine labour with capital more effectively. Better education and training could help mitigate poor management, especially in mid- sized businesses."

LeaderShape's Chairman, John Knights responds:  "The UK approach to increasing productivity is primarily by cutting costs; the German, Dutch and Scandinavian approach is about capital investment and providing good technical education (especially non-university level), which is more successful. In the UK, this approach lacks support from both government and the banksHowever, the greatest potential gain in productivity is through changing culture to improve engagement and empowerment and, hence, discretionary extra input from all staff. This is well documented and researched. And it requires better leadership!"

John cites a King's Fund paper showing that an engaged employee will put in up to 20% more discretionary effort than a non-engaged one. He adds:  " Engagement is down to culture, is down to leadership."

As Paul Krugman, the economist and Nobel laureate says: "Productivity isn't everything but, in the long run, it is almost everything".

Financial & Legal NGO.   Engaging Employees for a Major Uplift in Productivity:   Senior Leaders' Talent Development Programme.

LEADERSHAPE WAS APPOINTED to deliver a programme of leadership development for a non-governmental legal and financial regulatory body. The aim was to prepare 12 participants for higher office, taking into account rapid expansion and the need to propagate and maintain the desired culture, despite significant diluting factors.

Case resolution and progression reached the highest levels ever seen in the organisation. Find out how here.
"Working on the basis of 30% uplift in performance of 39 senior regulators on a minimum salary of £75k. These people are now delivering the work of 51. The cost saving of a more productive team over employing more regulators is £900k per annum, a greater than a 5x Return on Investment for the whole programme."
