" Love your children. In them you can see Baby Jesus.
Pray for them a lot and every day put them under Holy Mary's protection

From Mrs. Rowley

As I write this, we are anticipating the celebration of our annual Gala (April 1), with the theme of "Knight Around the World." We are so grateful for the community support, from school families , parishioners, and our sponsors. In particular we thank our wonderful Gala Committee: Michele Robbins, Eileen Bliss, Heather Terreri, Sharon Driscoll, Rachel Kramer, and Cathy Seangio . No event is possible without the tremendous organization and dedication of volunteers like these. We are truly blessed. But we still need your help! Full participation by school families is so important! We still have some tickets for the gala left, and we are really trying to get as many school families there as possible. This is not just a fund-raiser, but an exciting social gathering. Get to know other class parents; enjoy food, fun, and travel! We are also looking for donations of more desserts for the dessert auction. I know that we have the "sweetest" group of parents, so please consider donating a dessert (made or bought!) for the auction. We have a wonderful selection of items available in our auctions, including a stay in Disney World! See you on Saturday!

Many students have been asking about the change-over to spring uniform. This usually is announced when we have a continuous stream of warm weather days. As you know, we are not there yet! At this point we will make the change-over effective upon our return from Easter break: April 24. This hopefully gives you time to gather all relevant uniform pieces together.

Please join us on Wednesday, April 12 for Living Stations at 2:15 pm. This will be enacted by our 8 th grade class. Also, the school will be hosting the Lenten Soup Supper on Friday April 7 at 6:00 pm. We will be asking for donations of meatless soups, pasta dishes, salads and breads, as well as help for set-up, clean-up and serving. We invite you all to join us for this final parish Lenten supper. Please note that our school will close for Easter break at 11:30 am on Thursday, April 13 and return to school on Monday, April 24.

Exciting news! St. Ambrose has been chosen to host a USA Engineering and Science Nifty Fifty STEM Speaker!   " The ' Nifty   Fifty   (times 4)', a program of Science Spark, are a group of 200 noted science and engineering professionals who fan out across the country to speak about their work and careers at various middle and high schools. Featuring some of the most inspiring role models in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, this signature program of the USA Science and Engineering Festival presents ... students with the latest in green technology, engineering, human health and medicine, astronomy and space exploration, nanotechnology, computer science, and more. " This is a middle school assembly and our speaker is Dr. Burgess from NIH. Our gratitude to PreK and Kindergarten parent, Meghan Scott, for entering our school into the contest.

Club Updates

Last week in STEM Club our 2 nd - 8 th grade had an engineering challenge: design and build a glider that would carry an egg safely to the ground. Our younger members started with an excellent question, what is a glider? A glider is an aircraft without an engine. We then discussed and diagramed the three forces on a glider which they would have to consider in their design: Weight, Lift and Drag.

The club members had a variety of materials to choose from, starting with construction paper for paper airplanes (the simplest gliders), and all the way to corrugated cardboard and small pieces of balsa wood.

The Engineering Design Process (EDP) is cyclic in nature and our club always works through the steps (consciously and unconsciously) when given a challenge. This particular challenge though proved to be an excellent way to loop through the design, test and redesign phases. We had many club members testing in the hallway and then redesigning, often going through 5 or 6 iterations before they were satisfied. It was great to see them working the problem.

We then took our gliders outside for a final test and evaluation. Everyone did great; some gliders went farther than others, some lost the eggs, but all in all, it was a successful challenge!

Our K-1 st group had some fun as well with a chemistry experiment. Kindergarten has been learning about rainbows, so we built on that in STEM club with an experiment involving colors and milk.

Each student was given a plate with a small amount of whole milk and 4 drops of food coloring in it. We then discussed our hypotheses of what would happen when we placed a Q-tip with dish soap in it. We had some very good guesses and then we performed our experiment.

The kids were AMAZED! It was pure magic in STEM Club last week. They loved it so much the experiment was repeated two more times! We then changed it up a bit and made some hypotheses as to what would happen if we did the experiment with water instead of milk. The kids found that the water did not work as well, which led to some good conclusions of what the milk had that the water didn't, and that is the milk fat molecules. We had an age appropriate discussion of the fat molecules interacting with the soap molecules to create these beautiful rainbow burst patterns.

Please send in your submissions! I accept submissions from teachers, staff, and parents. If you know of something interesting going on in our community, or want to give a shout out to someone at the school, I'd love to add it to the Buzz. I especially enjoy pictures. Please contact Mrs. Rowley to make sure that we have permission to publish pictures of every student in the picture and make sure the pictures are less than 5MB. Submissions are due by Mondays at 5pm. Thank you!
