2016 Central Healthy Start Annual Report

The 2016 Central Healthy Start annual reports are completed and have been sent to our state legislators, community partners, Board members and prenatal and postnatal providers.
This year, the annual report showed that there were a total of 5,454 Healthy Start services provided to families with pregnant women and infants in our service area.
There was an estimated 6,329 pregnant women and of them, 4,914 (78%) were assessed for risk factors using the Healthy Start prenatal screen. Of those women who were assessed using the Healthy Start prenatal screen, a total of 2,862 (45%) of them received a Healthy Start service.
There was a total of 4,914 infants born in 2016 and of those infants, 5,754 (91%) of them were assessed for risk factors using the Healthy Start infant screen which is an increase from the 90% in 2015. A total of 2,592 (41%) of those infants received Healthy Start services which an increase from the 33% that received a Healthy Start service in 2015.
We'd like to thank our Healthy Start Service Providers for their hard work in helping all of our moms, babies and families navigate the challenging world of parenthood as well as our prenatal and postnatal providers who made sure to administer the screen to their patients to assess risks and address concerns and ensure that every baby born in 2016 had a HEATHLY START in life!

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Throughout the month of April, Central Healthy Start encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making the Central Florida area a better place for children and families.  By ensuring parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse and neglect by making meaningful connections with children, youth and families in our communities.

Research has shown that protective factors are present in families.  Promoting these factors is among the most effective ways to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect.  They are:
  • Nurturing and attachment
  • Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development
  • Parental resilience
  • Social connections
  • Concrete supports for parents
  • Social and emotional competence of children
April is a time to celebrate the important role that communities play in protecting children and strengthening families! Everyone's participation in this effort is critical.  Focusing on ways to connect with families is the best thing our area can do to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Recap of the Hernando County World's Greatest Baby Sower
Every year several families in Hernando County come to celebrate their new additions at the Annual World's Greatest Baby Shower event. This year, there were over 450 moms, dads and supporting caregivers who attended the event. Every family member who attended received information on the array of free resources available to their family in their own community. The Baby Shower is a fun, educational event for expectant and new parents. Mothers, fathers and all caregivers for the infant learn about child development, newborn care, child safety, healthy lifestyles, early learning, positive parenting and much more!

Attendees also have the opportunity to engage with several community organizations who provide free services to children and families. There are presentations, scavenger hunts, table drawings, games and many door prizes; which are generously donated by community members and local businesses. Every family walks away with a goodie bag full of fun surprises and plenty of education.

To learn more about the Baby Shower, or to participate in next year's event, contact Blaire Peterson.
