Changing Lives Benefit Breakfast Recap!


The Changing Lives Annual Benefit Breakfast  was held on  Tuesday, March 28 at the Westwood Country Club  where businesses, elected officials and individuals, came together to create awareness and visibility around family homelessness and domestic violence in our community. 

The sold-out event of over 300 attendees generated much enthusiasm and support. Kathy Albarado, President and CEO of Helios HR, shared her story and spoke to family homelessness and domestic violence. In addition, two of Shelter House's former clients were kind enough to share their own success stories.  

We were also gracious enough to receive two matching contributions from donors totaling $30,000, but help is still needed to fulfill our mission. By spreading the word and donating to our cause, together we can continue to make a difference in the lives o f those in need.

United We Stand Against Sexual Assault! 




April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month! (SAAM)




The  sexual   assault  statistics in the United States are startling: 
  • Every 2 minutes, a person in the U.S. is sexually assaulted with over half of those assaults going unreported to law enforcement. 
  • About 44% of victims are under the age of 18, many of whom know their attacker. 
  • It's estimated that 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men in America will have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
As a m essage of strength and solidarity, guests at our Changing Lives Benefit Breakfast also received  TEAL  bands  to encourage all who wear the bracelet to band together in the fight against  sexual   assault . 

Supporters  of  sexual  assault  awareness seek to educate people about the resources available to them if an  assault  occurs as well as information on how to reduce your risk of an attack. 

How can you bring awareness for this much needed cause? 

Please join Shelter House in creating awareness and visibility around this prevalent issue in our community by wearing your teal ribbons, bands and clothing.  Shelter House will also be promoting Sexual Assault Awareness on social media throughout the month, and we encourage you to share your photos with us so we can add them to our album!

Domestic Violence Action Center
The Fairfax County Domestic Violence Action Center (DVAC) is a comprehensive, co-located service center, staffed by county agency and community non-profit partners, created to provide culturally responsive information and support services for victims of domestic violence and stalking, and their families, as well as to promote the accountability of offenders of these crimes through specialized prosecution and offender supervision.
