Much as I love the Springtime with blossoms and leaves returning to the trees, I also  struggle a bit this time of year. As many of you know, I am allergic to the fuitless mulberry trees which are all over southern Utah, including in my neighborhood as street trees. Before the leaves come out, these trees have little pollen sacks which look like catepillars. Over the years I have learned how to deal with these little buggers. I keep the windows closed, I take Zyrtec at night, and I avoid sitting on patios underneath mulberry trees.

I used to be really irritated by this six-week process every Spring. But, I have discovered the less I complain about it and just do what I need to do, the situation is definitley more tolerable. Yes, I am a bit drowsy from the drug and have less energy during the day. And, my activities are a bit restricted. However, I have learned to apply the pain vs. suffering principle. While pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. That is because suffering is the difference bertween the way things are and the way I want them to be. The trees are here, their catepillars bother me, and I need to avoid them. When I focus on being grateful that I know the cause of the allergy and have discovered how to deal with it, I do get through it much better. Guess the mulberry trees are a way for me to re-learn this lesson each year.

How about you? What opportunites has life presented  you to reduce your suffering by accepting what is and practicing gratitude? I'd love to hear about it. We'll be exploring this more in the Spring Cleaning Workshop on June 3rd - details below.

  • Some great suggestions for how to deal with worry, which is one of the most challenging joy bandits.

Deal with Worry

  • Have you ever thought about how freeing it would be to not have to be right all the time? Give this a read to find out. I find this idea especially helpful when discussing politics. Perhaps I don't have all the asnwers and could learn something if I let go of needing to be right all the time.
  • A very cool website dedicated to helping people move from surviving to thriving in life. Check out the Grow tab for some great resources.

Thrive Global

  • One life on this Earth is all that we get, whether it is enough or not enough, and the obvious conclusion would seem to be that at the very least we are fools if we do not live it as fully and bravely and beautifully as we can.  - Frederick Buechner

Welcome to Bliss - How I Reclaimed My Joy

yoga_graphic.jpg

As you may recall from my last newsletter, one of the items on my Spring Joy Selection Sheet is to do morning yoga. I am pleased to share that I have been doing this pretty consistently. Yesterday when I was listening to the DVD, the instructor had us do a series of tough positions after which he told us to relax, saying "welcome to bliss". This struck me as such an interesting comment. I assume he meant how good it felt to rest the muscles we had been using, but it made me think a bit more about the idea of bliss.

Bliss? Hmmm? Where does this idea fit into the Recipe for Joy? Is it the same thing as joy or something different? As I thought more about the yoga example, I realized that bliss does not come from just thinking about yoga or doing it once in a while. It only shows up after we consistently do yoga and give it our full attention. Perhaps bliss is doing what brings us joy with attention and discipline.

This seemed like a good start but something was still missing. It is certainly very possible to do activities that bring us joy, and do them consistently, yet still not reach a state of bliss. I realized that the critical third element to bliss is the mind. We must be in the present moment and turn off the mental chatter. Releasing worry, fear, future-tripping, judgment, and self-criticism are essential. Certainly doing yoga helps with that through the breathing and focus on the body. It is hard to be too into your head when your body is being asked to contort and stretch beyond what you thought was possible.

Ah ha! The formula for bliss became clear:

Bliss = Joy + Discipline - Mental Chatter

As I thought about my journey towards a more joyful life, I realized this formula for bliss could be very helpful in many areas of life. When I commit to doing what brings me joy, I will give it my full committment and attention. No more trying or just dabbling occasionally. As Yoda says, "there is no try, only do."  Additionally, I will let go of the worry over things I cannot change and trust that all is unfolding in divine order. No more feeling helpless or overwhelmed. I will vigorously pursue joy and find new ways to share my joy with the world. My "Committee" is offically being given an eviction notice. Ahhhhh ... that does feel like bliss.
