For the  parents and familes of St. Therese Chinese Catholic School

Dear Parents,

March was shorter than usual with our Spring Break embedded at the end of the month, but in a few short weeks we hope to have a tremendous amount of information and good news to share with you as we dive deep into trimester 3!

Again, I want to thank the many parents who gave so much of their time and energy to support the Chinese New Year benefit. This was especially helpful on a day with so many activities packed in this one day.

It was our great pleasure at CNY to honor Mr. and Mrs. Perry and Rose Marie Lau, as our 2017 recipient of the Lifetime Service Award. Mr. and Mrs. Lau have been a cornerstone of the St. Therese parish family for years and they generously give their talents to us in so many ways. Congratulations Perry and Rose Marie!

Save yourself a trip!  Martinelli's will be at St. Therese on Tuesday, May 3rd from 7 - 9 am taking orders.

I hope that this Lenten season brings a rebirth in our lives as we feel the warmth of the sun upon us with more consistency. Our 7th and 8th graders will impressively portray the Living Stations of the Cross to help our church and school community spiritually prepare for Easter. We warmly invite you to join us during this Lenten season. For your convenience, we have included the Holy Week schedule in our newsletter.

Blessings,
Ms. Cavallone
Principal

On the evening of March 27th eighteen students represented St. Therese Chinese Catholic School at the Chicago South Regional History Bee, held at at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights. When the competition was completed, it was announced that five students from St. Therese had qualified for the National Finals in Atlanta in June.

St. Therese Students Advance to the
2017 National History Bee
Back Row: John Plebanski (7), Caitlyn Lee, Armelle Balogun (8)
Front Row: Tristan Li (5), Ephraim Balogun(6)
Armelle, John, Caitlyn, and Tristan all qualified for the Championship Round of their Division (Top 8) at this competition and all performed admirably.  This is the second time in school history we have had individuals qualify for the Regional Championship Round and the most competitors (5) we have had qualify to this level.  This is the third time that Armelle has qualified for the National Finals, a feat only accomplished once before by Lambert Hu in 2015.

St. Therese is proud to announce that we have qualified individuals for the National History Bee for 5 straight years (Atlanta 2013, Atlanta 2014, Louisville 2015, Chicago 2016, Atlanta 2017) and are very proud of our current team for keeping this tradition alive!  Wish our students well at this year's national competition in June.

C ongratulations to all of the students on the History Team who put in their time at the team practices and represented St. Therese in superb fashion at the Regional Bee!

Good News Spotlight*

At the young age of 4, Summer Kiehn (1) had a $5 pony ride. From that point forward, Summer was hooked on riding. Summer's parents found a local riding farm in Palos Park for Summer to continue your passion.  Summer has been taking lessons for 2 years now and competes in the an annual competition where riders compete for medals. Summer rides every Sunday rain or shine

* Good News Spotlight will be a regular newsletter feature. Each newsletter will spotlight St. Therese student achievements or interesting activities. Than you to all our parents who emailed their child's "Good News."
Ms. Cavallone Presented with Golder Award for Leadership

In case you missed all the excitement on March 23rd, t he Golden Apple Foundation presented   Principal Cavallone with the Stanely C. Golder Award for Excellence in Leadership. The entire student body, school staff, Cardinal Blase Cupich, Superintendent Dr. James Rigg, and others were there when Ms. Cavallone was surprised with her award. Ms. Cavallone remarked in response to her prestigious award by saying, "I'm so blessed to be the principal at the most beautiful school and most wonderful family. Our students, families, staff, and supporters have helped St. Therese be so successful. I'm really so blessed."
Mr. Howard Becomes Dr. Howard
After 10 years of working full-time and studying part-time, Mr. Howard, finally finished his doctorate. The interview below highlights key moments in his academic journey.

Who served as your role model throughout these 10 years?

That's a great question. St. Therese Lisieux, doctor of the Church, inspired me. Her faithful
witness of doing 'little things' served as my reminder to focus my academic pursuits not on being esteemed, but rather esteeming others.

Now that you have a Doctorate, what are your plans?

The doctor of ministry degree is a very practical degree that equips ministers with academic tools that enable us to assist others so that they can flourish in their different ministries. Here at St. Therese I have ample opportunities to make this happen: training catechists, designing evangelization techniques in our parish transformation plan, developing retreats, planning masses, preparing formation talks with parents, and encouraging teachers to integrate catechesis within their lesson plans.

Finally, what insight would you like to share with young people about your studies?

I was extremely fortunate to have worked and studied at the same time, for this provided me with a great laboratory for integration and application.  God desires that each of us develop integrally and provides ample opportunities to make connections between faith and our experience.  I encourage everyone to continue learning about the Catholic faith.
