Volunteer Alberta's Volunteer Screening Program (VSP) provides funding to eligible nonprofit organizations to support Vulnerable Sector Checks and organizational development in the area of volunteer screening. To be eligible, nonprofit organizations must serve/work with vulnerable populations and must engage volunteers in positions of trust or authority with vulnerable populations. 

April 30, 2017 is the deadline for two components of the VSP:

Volunteer Screening Development Grant
The grant provides $2000 to support the development of effective volunteer screening processes, policies, and procedures. 

Vulnerable Sector Check Fee Waiver
The fee waiver helps to alleviate costs associated with Vulnerable Sector Checks and is available to organizations operating in communities where a service fee is required. Organizations that have an old VOAN (Voluntary Organization Authorization Number) are required to update their existing profile with Volunteer Alberta prior to April 30, 2017 in order to receive a new Volunteer Screening Program Number (VSPN). A (VSPN) provides access to a fee waiver for approved volunteer positions requiring Vulnerable Sector Checks.

Working with individuals, families and communities in any capacity is rewarding work for all types of service providers, however, supporting survivors of trauma, violence and abuse comes with a host of challenges that can deplete internal resources of those in the front-line caring professions. This workshop will provide an overview of compassion satisfaction and fatigue and vicarious traumatization and burnout. Participants will have the opportunity to explore and share self-care strategies within a holistic framework.

A University of Alberta study is seeking an older couple who are currently renovating their home with the intention it will allow them to age-in-place.
Our Home: For All Ages & Stages Of Life explores why and how a couple embarks on the decision to change their home in order to prepare for aging-in-place. This research may be used to assist others in this decision-making process and to inform architects, builders, renovators, home product suppliers, and government policy makers.

Key eligibility requirements:

• Canadian, male and female, married couple, each partner is over 50 years of age
• Ownership of a single-family home that you've lived in for a minimum of 5 years
• In the midst of a renovation done by a renovator, friend or family member, or yourself

Participation in the study includes two home walk throughs, two interviews, and the keeping of a journal. The renovation features of your home will be photographed or videotaped and the walk throughs and interviews will be recorded.

The Strathcona Place Outreach Team and the Elder Abuse Resources and Supports (EARS) team from Catholic Social Services present this workshop that provides support, education, intervention, and resources to seniors experiencing abuse from a family, friend or caregiver. Carfit is an educational/community program to assist seniors to find their best fit behind the wheel. Kinda like ergonomics! Safety is the priority.
