April 2017 Preservation News & Events
Tell the Ohio General Assembly to Support Ohio History!
The Ohio House of Representatives is meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, April 5, to vote on the state budget. Act now to ensure that funding for Ohio's historic resources are included. Currently, the state supports history-related activities by funding the Ohio History Connection at about a $1 per Ohio resident. The Ohio History Connection:

  • Works with local partners to maintain and provide public access to more than 50 historic sites and museums across Ohio;
  • Maintains the State Archives where the state's founding documents, public records and genealogical resources are kept;
  • Works with communities and developers to ensure the preservation of historic buildings through the State Historic Preservation Office;
  • Supports the important works of social studies teachers and local historical societies statewide; and
  • Creates experiences for Ohio families and tourists by maintaining historical artifacts and other museum objects at the Ohio History Center and elsewhere where more than 400,000 people visit each year.

Support Ohio Heritage through the Ohio History Fund
Time is running out to make a donation on your Ohio Tax return to the Ohio History Fund. This Fund supports history projects in Ohio's communities. The Ohio History Fund was created to promote the preservation and sharing of Ohio's heritage by funding local, regional and statewide projects, programs, and events related to the broad sweep of the state's history. The more funding that the History Fund receives through tax check offs, the more grants that can be made to Ohio communities. The goal for the Ohio History Fund tax check off in 2017 is $88,000 - that's just $9 (the average tax check off donation) from 9,800 contributors, out of more than 3 million state income tax refund recipients. Please consider donating to the Ohio History Fund this year!

Endangered Antiquities Exhibit
On display now through the end of the year at the Cleveland Public Library is a special collection entitled "Endangered Antiquities." Special collections will exhibit rare and historical volumes pertaining to cultural sites and treasures that have been destroyed due to conflict and development. Archaeological sites that are markers of civilization are in constant danger of being damaged; such as the recent causalities of the ancient monuments of Nimrud and Palmyra. Learn about the past, present and what you can do for the future to preserve our human heritage. The exhibit is on display in the Special Collections John G. White Corridor, 3rd Floor.

Building Doctor Clinics
The Ohio History Connection has announced its 2017 Building Doctor Clinic schedule for 2017. The OHC offers several free clinic events throughout the state as a service to communities and homeowners. The "doctors" work in teams, teaching owners how to recognize and solve some of the most common sources of problems in maintaining older buildings and how to make informed decisions about repairs and improvements. Each Building Doctor clinic begins with a free seminar on topics like peeling paint and failing plaster, wet basements, deteriorating masonry, windows, wood issues, and bringing buildings built before 1955 up to date without sacrificing historic integrity. Their Northeast Ohio clinic will be held in North Canton this year on May 18-19.
