Julie Schuller transitions to President and CEO of Sixteenth Street

Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers is pleased to announce that Julie Schuller, MD, MPH, MBA, FACP, is President & CEO of the organization.

Dr. Schuller launched her career more than 20 years ago as a clinical provider with Sixteenth Street.  She then served as medical director, and most recently, as Executive Vice President & Vice President of Clinical Affairs. Driven by her unwavering commitment to addressing peoples' health care needs and improving the environment where they live work and play, Dr. Schuller has been instrumental in helping Sixteenth Street earn its reputation as a best practice for delivering quality care through an integrated population health lens.

"Poverty impacts people's health tremendously," Dr. Schuller said. "I'm excited and honored to lead our responsibility to address its roots beyond the exam room to improve the health of our patients any way we can: medical care, involvement in the community, collaboration and coordination with partners."

As President & CEO, Dr. Schuller is eager to continue the organization's dedication to the complete health of the individual, as well as the overall health of Milwaukee's underserved communities.

Said Schuller, "Population health is my passion.  I feel it's vital to continue our emphasis on
community health, rather than
health center, by going out into the community to address population health and the social determinants of health."

Dr. Schuller is energized by Sixteenth Street's growth which has always been driven in response to needs of the community.  Over the last 10 years, the organization has more than doubled the number of patients it serves. But there are many people still living without access to quality health care.  Its upcoming expansion projects, made possible by partnerships with Aurora and Froedtert, will help Sixteenth Street continue to fill this gap and bring care where it's most needed.

"We need to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time," said Dr. Schuller. "Having coverage and locations available is critically important to that."

Dr. Schuller succeeds John Bartkowski, DrPH, who served as Sixteenth Street's president and CEO for the last 27 years. He announced his retirement this past year.

"We are extremely grateful for John's superb leadership and vision," said Sixteenth Street Board Chairman Rick Walters. "This is a natural fit for Julie, and I'm confident she will carry on Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers' mission to the fullest."
The numbers are in, and they are lookin' good...
  • Sixteenth Street has administered over 16,000 flu vaccines (and counting) this flu season! 2,000 of those vaccines went to infants and 1,000 of those were first time flu vaccines!
  • Sixteenth Street Urgent Care services cared for more than 3,200 individuals in March alone! This means people are avoiding unnecessary emergency department visits and getting the care they need at an affordable cost for all.
New WIC hours now accommodate late appointment times

After taking feedback from participants and doing a pilot of extended hours last month, Sixteenth Street WIC has decided to change our hours to accommodate later appointment times (see new schedule below). We learned it was very difficult for many of our participants to get around work/school schedules and this should alleviate that barrier for many. You'll notice that our Friday hours are shorter and that participants are highly encouraged to call in the morning to set up a same day appointment time.

New WIC Hours

Monday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Wednesday: 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Friday: 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
**On Fridays we have limited availability families are asked to call after 7:30 a.m. for same day needs.
April is National Volunteer Month!

Over the past year, almost 150 smart and energetic volunteers have given us over 1,600 hours of their time! They've led focus groups to measure the effectiveness of our programming, followed up with patients due for medical screenings and exams, educated kids about healthy lifestyles, interpreted in our exam rooms, cleaned our neighborhood, collected resources and so many more things to keep our patients, clients, participants, and neighbors living better, healthier, and happier lives

Rochelle Neu

Rochelle has always had a passion and talent for making baby blankets and years ago she found the perfect counterpart to that passion; moms in need at Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers.  After hearing about the work being done in the Parenting Resource Center at Sixteenth Street, Rochelle made the decision to dedicate her time and sewing skills to those moms in need - and has been doing it ever since.  Rochelle struggles with a degenerative eye problem and soon expects to go completely blind, but wanted "to keep being worthwhile" until she could no longer see.   To our moms she has been more than "worthwhile," she has been  lifesaving .  Rochelle makes by hand and donates a variety of items to the Parenting Resource Center as fast and as often as she can produce them...
