What it Means to be a Hospice Volunteer

At Hospice of Santa Barbara, the common thread across all nine of our volunteer programs is the person-to-person connection that forms between our volunteers and our clients. Hospice volunteering can be emotional, but the rewards are great. Our Director of Volunteers, Nicole Romasanta, shares insights on HSB's volunteers as we approach National Volunteer Week, April 23-29. Read more.

Each day, our firefighters, police officers, EMTs, social workers, doctors, nurses and others who work in local social services are at the forefront of sorrow, pain, and often times death. To support and honor what they experience on a daily basis, our Community Outreach and Education program works with these groups to provide counseling and resiliency training. Read more about this program in my recent article.

Another group we honor this month is our volunteers. As we approach National Volunteer Week, I'm inspired by the people in our community who seek out meaningful opportunities to serve others who are in a vulnerable time of their lives. We look forward to honoring our volunteers next month at our appreciation party on May 18.
Mentors Needed for 'I Have a Friend' Program
Hospice of Santa Barbara is seeking volunteers to make a difference in a child's life by joining the "I Have A Friend®" Mentor Program. Mentor volunteers are adults who experienced the death of a parent or sibling as a child and are trained and matched with children who have recently experienced a similar loss. Mentors help a child to heal, thrive and feel "normal" again.

Training takes place over two consecutive Saturdays.

Date: Saturday, May 6 and 13, 2017
Time: 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Location: Hospice of Santa Barbara, 2050 Alameda Padre Serra, Suite #100, Santa Barbara 93103
For more information and a mentor application, please visit hospiceofsb.org or contact Nicole Romasanta, Director of Volunteer Services, at (805) 563-8820.
