Pickering 101 Participants

28 Pickering residents are currently completing the second annual, 'Pickering 101 - Your City. Right Now.,' a free, 8-class course designed to help the public understand how its local government works.

The course is delivered through weekly, two-hour classes by City staff, who teach participants what is involved in the planning and delivery of the services, events, and programs that touch their everyday lives, and how they can impact change and improvements to these services.

Classes cover a variety of topics, including the history of Pickering, future City planning and development, a meet and greet with the Mayor and Members of Council, and more.

We wish this year's Pickering 101 students all the best!

Pickering City Hall
Pickering City Hall - 27 years later, and it's time for a refresh!

Pickering City Hall will be undergoing a transformation to its main level, starting this summer.

The enhancements will include improvements to barrier-free access to the Council Chambers and main floor service counters of City Hall, as well as expanded programmable space connecting the Council Chambers and main lobby.

Other changes include an accessible washroom and improved security controls.

While we understand that this may cause some inconvenience, arrangements are underway to ensure City services continue to operate as efficiently as possible. Committee and Council meetings will be relocated to the Pickering Recreation Complex to accommodate the Council Chamber upgrades, which are anticipated to be complete by the end of the year.

Stay tuned for additional updates.

Important fire safety reminders

Recently, three Pickering residents were sent to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation following a cooking fire. Luckily, working smoke alarms provided early warning on fire conditions , but unfortunately the residents inhaled smoke after re-entering the home in an attempt to extinguish the fire and look for the family cat.

Steaming pot on stove Pickering Fire Services reminds you that once someone has escaped a burning building, they should never re-enter for any reason.

Just as important as having working smoke alarms, is making sure everyone in your home knows how to escape before a fire occurs.

Did you know that cooking is the number one cause of residential fires?

Prevent a tragedy at home and always stay in the kitchen and look while you cook, especially if using oil or high temperatures.
  • When cooking, ensure you have the proper fitting lid readily available for the pot/pan you are using.
  • If the contents of the pot/pan you are using catch fire, slide the lid over it.
  • Sliding the proper fitting lid over the pot/pan will smother the fire by removing the oxygen.
  • Turn off the stove, and do not attempt to move the pot or pan to another burner or outside, as it may lead to burn injuries.
  • Finally, call 911 to report all fire incidents.
