FCCLA Community Service Project:  Wayne Carle Middle School, Arvada

I'm Lauren H. an eighth grader at Wayne Carle Middle School in Arvada. At my school, we have an extracurricular program: Family, Career, Community Leaders of America. The organization's goal is to provide community service for other people. The students who participate in this after school club aren't receiving any extra credit or "bonus points" by joining, they just want to help their community and give back...we have collected a good amount of supplies for your foster Labs!

Spark Change Community Service Project: McAuliffe International School, Denver
The Spark Change program is part of the Service-Learning Program at the McAuliffe International School where the students identify local charities they would like to support. Safe Harbor is delighted to be chosen as a beneficiary of their annual Service-Learning Day in April. The students will be making special decorated tote bags with the SHLR logo for our newly adopted Labs that include toys, collars, dog dishes and treats - all handmade!

Spring Break Community Service

Serving others in the community is a key component of 8th grader Brandon S.'s education at Cherry Hills Christian School. He told us, "I really love dogs and wanted to do something to help out the rescued Labs." Over Spring Break he delivered supplies to our foster Labs, and donated time to playing with and socializing our rescued Labs staying at Canine Fitness and Fun Center.

PS. People only at this "Yappy Hour"!
Dear Labby: Spring is Here and Please Don't Eat the Flowers!
Dear Labby is ready to offer advice on all matters "Labby" from both four and two-legged folks.

Dear Labby,
Photo courtesy of Kateri Nelson - all rights reserved.
Flowers are springing up in my back yard and on warm days my Peeps are digging in the dirt with all the enthusiasm of a Lab! All that stuff smells great and looks like it might be tantalizing to my taste buds, but my friend "Hawkeye" told me he sampled great smelling dirt and flowers last spring and ended up at the vet. Is it true? Can spring flowers or dirt make me sick?

~Blossom R.
_________________________
Dear Blossom,

Gardening season is here! Some spring plants, flowers and fertilizers may look or smell tasty, but can be bad news for us pups. No nibbling these, they're toxic: tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, crocus and lilies. Fertilizer in the bag or in the dirt may have a heavenly scent and set you to drooling, but if it has any of these ingredients, you'll be one sick puppy headed to the nearest vet if you sample it: blood meal, bone meal, organophosphates (OP), pesticides /insecticides or iron.
Have your mom or dad check out the  Pet Poison Helpline  for more info on spring season toxins to watch out for.

So my advice: Just tip toe through the tulips and be on your way!

Love, Labby

New Beginnings: Tucker
There is an extra special place in our hearts for folks who see the beauty in older dogs and decide to add one to their family, allowing these pups to live out their lives knowing they are loved and appreciated just for being their lovely old selves, quirks and all.   At eleven years old, a handsome yellow Lab named Tucker was looking for a new place to put down his food bowl and was hoping to find a loving home where he could relax, catch up on his beauty sleep, spend time with dog buddies, and just enjoy a low-key retirement in his senior years.  All of his wishes were granted when he was adopted by Lacey and her eight-year-old Lab mix boy, Jack; and Tucker is now thriving with his wonderful new family and loving every minute of his new life of leisure.

Tucker's new mom writes:

Tucker is what I would call an old grumpy man.  He loves to lounge on the couch and sleep all day.  He might be the loudest snoring dog I have ever heard.  When he is not taking his hourly naps, he can be found chewing on tennis balls, ripping up toys.  He also very much enjoys the dog park, short hikes and running off lead and playing in water.  He is such an easy going mellow dog.  I am so happy to have him for the remainder of his golden years!

Our thanks to Lacey and Jack for making sure that Tucker's golden years are truly golden.

Many thanks to Andy for fostering Tucker!
Volunteer Spotlight: Margaret Hui
Since retiring a year and a half ago, Margaret Hui has jumped right into volunteering with Safe Harbor and giving back to the organization that has matched her with four wonderful labs of her own.  Her passion for dogs started early, as her father owned and showed many different breeds of dogs, ranging from German Shepherds to Pekingese pups.  Margaret grew up in Hong Kong and then lived in Los Angeles before settling in Denver 18 years ago.

Margaret, having previously had a lab, learned about Safe Harbor shortly after the organization's founding.  Over the years, she has adopted her sweet labs, Heidi, Lani, Indy, and Piper, from Safe Harbor.  Each and every dog has a special place in her heart.  Heidi was her travel buddy, whose adventures are well documented in this photo with Margaret in front of the Hollywood sign.  And Margaret describes Indy as having been an extremely friendly dog with a few non-lab quirks, such as enjoying being indoors more than being outside and ignoring other dogs while soliciting pets from their owners.  And now, when she's not preoccupied by her own pup and rescue cat, Margaret assists Safe Harbor with reference checks and transport.

Thank you, Margaret!
