Retrospective on Our Year of Dirty Jobs
(With Due Apologies to Mike Rowe)
What a great year! Busy is as busy does; since our last issue of
Tales From The Trenches, we have been fantastically busy. So much so that you have not received one of these newsletters in quite awhile. We hope that you too are benefiting from the strong economy; it is said that a rising tide lifts all boats!
Over the last half year or so, we developed and protected high-capacity groundwater supplies. We monitored hydrologic conditions (like with the portable flume pictured here). We
tested soils for high-capacity wastewater discharges.
We also investigated and
remediated contaminated streams. We built
geospatial databases in GIS. We supported permit applications and generally applied sound science to water resources projects across the region.
We would love to support your current or future project. Please feel free to give us a call or drop us an
email!
ALWI Testimony Supports Passage
of Beneficial Legislation in Annapolis
Senior Scientist
Amy M. Parrish, testified before the Maryland House of Delegates in support of House Bill 1045 of the 2017 legislative session.
Signed into law by Governor Hogan on April 7, 2017,
HB 1045 requires the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to develop regulations that (1) encourage the use of ultra-filtration wastewater treatment technologies in non-residential on-site sewage disposal systems (OSDS) and (2) . allow for larger hydraulic loading rates when compared to current MDE regulations and technical policies.
Ms. Parrish's testimony was instrumental in illustrating the absence of environmental impacts associated with larger hydraulic loading rates, provided a proper
mounding analysis is performed by qualified
hydrogeologists.
The benefit of this is more compact site disturbance, more economical OSDS installations and more opportunity to preserve trees and open space as site features.
Environmentalists and stakeholders are both pleased with the bill. It incentivizes cleaner discharges, more compact site development and lower OSDS construction costs.
Sarah Wood joined the ALWI team in February 2017 as a Staff Scientist and GIS Analyst.
Sarah completed her B.S. in Environmental Studies at Western Washington University. She brings a diverse background to ALWI, including park ranger service with the Maryland Dept. Nat. Resources.
We are very pleased to welcome Sarah to the ALWI team!
