DON'T BE A DISTRACTED DRIVER

Technology allows us to make phone calls, dictate texts or emails and update social media while driving - all actions that are proven to increase crash risk. The National Safety Council observes April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month to draw attention to this epidemic.

Each day in the United States, over 8 people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

For your safety and the safety of others, it is strongly recommended that you do not use your phone -- even hands-free -- while driving.

COPING WITH SPRING ALLERGIES

Those spring blooms are not just pretty -- in many cases they are primary sources for seasonal allergies.

Each year millions of Americans suffer from allergies as a result of tree, grass and weed pollen.
Common symptoms of springtime pollen allergies include r unny nose, i tchy eyes, s neezing, and c ongestion.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends the following actions to reduce allergic reactions to pollen:
  • Limit your outdoor activities when pollen counts are high.
  • Keep windows closed during pollen season and use central air conditioning with a HEPA filter attachment.
  • Take your allergy medicine as prescribed.
  • Bathe and shampoo your hair daily before going to bed.
  • Wash bedding in hot, soapy water once a week.
  • Wear sunglasses and a hat. This will help keep pollen out of your eyes and off your hair.
  • Limit close contact with pets that spend a lot of time outdoors.
  • Change and wash clothes worn during outdoor activities.
Most seasonal pollen allergies can be controlled with over-the-counter medications. However, in some cases prescription medicines might be necessary.
