Join Auburn's original 'Golden Girl' at the new Aquatic Centre 

The Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre will host a free community open day on Saturday 22 April, 10am-3pm. The day will include kid's activities, swimming squad demonstrations, inflatable fun, group fitness classes and giveaways.
 
Joining us on the day will be Ruth Everuss herself. The former Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medalist has a long association with Auburn pool. She attended the official opening as a teenager before competing in the 1960 Rome Olympics. Apparently the chlorine was so bad that day everyone ended up in the casualty room.
 
After her swimming career Ruth Everuss became a successful swimming coach, training the next generation of athletes from Auburn pool. Over time she would grow her school's swimming program into the largest in Australia.    
 
The upgraded $27M Aquatic Centre honours her long association with the pool and the wider Auburn community. Her story is one of the many stories that make up Cumberland's rich history. We hope to see you there.

Cumberland Community Gets A Say

Cumberland Council is inviting public feedback on three separate policies, including the Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), Draft Cumberland Youth Strategy and Draft Community Strategic Plan. The documents are on public display until Monday 8 May.

The Disability Inclusion Action Plan outlines Council's commitment to improving access to services, facilities and employment opportunities. The Cumberland Youth Strategy aims to establish Cumberland as the best place in NSW to be a young person and the Community Strategic Plan is a four year road map for Council to deliver the community's vision for the local area. The DIAP provides a whole-of-Council framework for proactively dealing with issues of inclusion.
New measures target affordable housing

Cumberland Council has taken steps to address housing affordability in the area. From now on five per cent of any proposal to rezone land for residential purposes must be set aside for affordable housing. Furthermore, five per cent of the residential development happening along the Parramatta Road Corridor (as part of the Urban Transformation Strategy) will be set aside for the same purpose.

Council is also investigating inclusionary zoning measures, which would require a higher proportion of affordable housing to be incorporated into all future development projects. The reforms acknowledge that in the past 10 years median household incomes have risen by 11 per cent, while local median rental costs have increased by 77 per cent. Learn more

The new reforms will see more affordable housing being built in Cumberland.

 
Heritage Festival Talks

As part of the 2017 Heritage Festival, Cumberland libraries have organised two talks to illuminate the history of our area. Steve Norton from the Canal Reserve Action Group (CRAG)  will discuss the remarkable history of the lower prospect canal reserve.
 
Dr Greg Marcar from the Lidcombe Heritage Group Inc. will trace the history of NSW healthcare through the Lidcombe hospital (1893-1995), right up to its rebirth as the Olympic Media Village in 2000.

Asbestos- what is it, where is it & how to manage it Workshop

Cumberland Council is organising a free information evening for local residents who want to learn more about asbestos. The information presented will help attendees understand where they might find asbestos in their home, and how to safely remove & dispose of less than 10sqm of asbestos.

All residents who attend the workshop will be given a free asbestos removal kit (valued at $100) which includes all the safety gear and information you need to safely manage small amounts of asbestos within your home. NB. Remember any removal work over 10sqm MUST be done by a licensed contractor!
