Triumph Over Adversity

A look at two African American men whose lives and acts of human courage impacted a generation will be the topic of a presentation at 6pm Wednesday at the Temple of Peace. Maui resident Heather Salmon will lecture on the African diaspora and the lives of her late father, Dr. John Douglas Salmon, and Uncle David V.J. Bell, Ph.D. Joining Heather Salmon, will be her mother and wife of the late Dr. John Douglas Salmon; Mrs. Beverley Salmon who will lecture also.

Mrs. Beverley Salmon born and educated in Toronto Canada, was a Public Health Nurse, trained at Wellesley Hospital and University of Toronto. She chaired the Black Liaison Committee with the Toronto Board of Education, the Black Heritage Program, Urban Alliance on Race Relations. Mrs. Salmon was appointed to the Ontario Human Rights Commission and the Ontario Status of Women Council and other notable acts. She is currently engaged in lobbying for action on the UN's declaration of the International Decade for People of African Descent and is a sought after public speaker.

The program is free and open to all. Dr. Salmon was Canada's first black surgeon, and Bell was a dean, author and leader in the sustainability movement. They were also musicians and family men. Both lost parents when they were children and went on to rise to the top of their fields. This lecture and video presentation reveals their pioneering breakthrough and accomplishments. Heather Salmon is a renowned sound healer, ordained priestess, cultural creative innovator and recording artist. For more information call the library at 873-3097. If you are having an event at the Temple of Peace and you'd like us to include your event flyer in our weekly newsletter, please email it to us. JPEG format is preferred as it reads better in both our newsletters and Facebook posts.

Our newsletter goes out the last and 15th day of the month. Our deadline for submission of fliers is one week prior to those dates.
