Letter from the President
Our year started off with a general meeting at Pat Warren's studio where we installed our new board members: Vice Pres.- Devora Safran and Secretary- Krista Baroudi. Then we had a bang up road trip to Palm Desert, but that is just the beginning. We have a great education committee that is going to bring us lots of opportunities to get involved with this year. Next up is our workshop with new member, Paul Messink on "creating dimension" in glass. Take advantage of this workshop, offered at a great price.
So please stay in touch with us for several varied events we have coming your way. Our next general meeting is Sunday, April 30 at North University Community Library (check the website calendar for details). Hope to see you there.
The AGASC is for all of us to get to know glass and each other better.
Jack Wade,
President AGASC

General Meeting and Lecture on Public Art
"Seal the Deal: the Nuts and Bolts of Bidding for (and Securing!) Commission and Public Art Installations" by Tom Morosz
Don't miss out on this FREE lecture! Following our General Meeting on April 30th Tom Marosz will give a talk "Seal the Deal: the Nuts and Bolts of Bidding for (and Securing!) Commission and Public Art Installations".

Tom Marosz installation San Diego Airport
|
Tom's broad skill set has enabled him to create a number of large scale installations. The Vantage Pointe sculpture, a lit glass winged water feature standing standing 18' tall, is stationed at the entrance to downtown San Diego at the corner of 10th and A Street. Another, created for the Law School of British Columbia, spans 4 stories and features 450 suspended glass sphere.
In 2013, Tom created and installed several glass features for the remodel of the Viejas Hotel and Casino. The largest of these features jumbo glass panels, fused in Tom's massive kiln, weaved with colors and textures reflective of the Viejas Kumeyaay Indian culture. Aside from Tom's public collections his unique sculptures are presently enjoyed in many private collections worldwide.

The last of 2016! AGASC Holiday Party
Many thanks to Devora Safran who has generously opened up her home again this past holiday season as she has done several years before! We love getting together to celebrate, socialize and create general havoc! This years "theme" for wardrobe was PJ Party. Never have so many adult onesies appeared in the same room. Comfort food and cozy costumes. Jon and Kathleen closely competed for best costume, although it is always a challenge to outdo Kathleen who will go to no end to have the best costume every year. The gift exchange or gift "steal" was as lively as ever. Thank you Devora!

Creating Dimension with Paul Messink
4 day workshop
When: May 23-26 Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm
Where: Susan Hirsch's Studio
968 E Rancheros Drive, Suite S
Cost: $700.00 / members $800.00 / non-members
Want to create thick glass panels that have great dimension and depth?
In this 4-day class, students will learn how to apply enamel to glass layers, and then stack and fuse these layers into solid panels. Topics covered include design and image selection, layout, discussion of enamels and how they respond to fusing temperatures, painting medium, how to mix and apply enamels, fusing schedules, bubble control, kiln loading instructions,
and finishing techniques.
The emphasis of this workshop is the processes involved in creating thick panels that include great dimension. It is not primarily a painting workshop, however many painting tips and techniques are also provided. Although drawing and painting experience is helpful, it is not required. Prior kiln-work experience is required, however.
Students will complete several initial exercises, and 2 additional projects during this class, and are encouraged to choose and bring to the class printed images for compositions they would like to use for these projects. Important image selection guidelines and a materials list will be provided prior to class.
We hope you will join us!

Palm Desert Trip Knocks our Socks Off!!
by Marti Blair
We couldn't have hit the desert at a better time. We were just looking forward to seeing the Kaplan-Ostergaard Collection (at the Palm Springs Museum - The Galen, in Palm Desert), but we got more than we counted on! Thank you to the collectors David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard for sharing their incredible collection of glass art with the public.
Tina Oldknow states in the Crocker Museum's book on the Kaplan-Ostergaard collection Glass for the New Millennium, "painting is the source of the couple's understanding of their collection". The works on view at the museum in Palm Desert were masterworks from dozens of glass artists: from Klaus Moje, to Karen LaMonte, Richard Whiteley, Bertil Vallien, and Clifford Rainey, April Surgent, Anne Wolfe, Steve Klein, Cristina Bothwell....too many to list here. We were treated to an intimate and fascinating tour of the work by our friend and museum docent Patrick Blythe. We thank you Patrick for your time, story telling, and inspirational ideas on approaching making.
In addition to the museum visit, we planned to visit Austin Art Projects, also in Palm Desert. Several of us had visited before and knew it would be a treat. Upon contacting David Austin regarding our plans to visit, he invited us to a special opening that was taking place that evening! Wow, little did we know that we would be meeting the artists Toots Zynsky, David Willis, and April Surgent as well! Our timing couldn't have been better! We expected to meet the maestro of the glass arts Lino Tagliapietra too, but as it turned out he was unable to attend. But we arrived looking our wonderful best and added a festive and celebratory mood to the event.
The opening was pure elegance. Just walking into a room full of Toots Zynsky's breathtaking pieces, after being greeted by some phenomenally seductive dresses by Karen LaMonte, then with what capacity for awe remained wandering into a room full of Lino Tagliapietra's new works, it was purely uplifting. David Willis' full scale figures were stunning as well, and he was most gracious as we surrounded him with questions. Toots was tireless throughout the evening talking with collectors and those of us who were in awe of her and her gorgeous work. She was delightful. Were you aware that she was a founder of Pilchuck and Urban Glass? She was a student with Dale Chihuly at Rhode Island School of Design and she worked alongside the guys making immense contributions to the glass arts on both coasts. Did I mention there was a full bar and hor d'oerves? Thank you David!!
For those of us who made the trip, 33 of us in total, it was a day to remember. For those of you who weren't able to join us, now looking at these images of their work, I encourage you to take some time to look them up online and fill your mind with new perspectives and knowledge and beauty. We are quite fortunate to be a part of the glass arts community in today's world of 3-D printers printing out glass sculptures, to be able to conjure up images and transform them with one or more of the myriad forms glass takes in the hands of individuals. All of the works shown here were made by hand. Making connects us all! Enjoy and carry on!

Process of a Kaiser Installation
by Susan Hirsch
Over the last year I have done 7 Installations for the new Kaiser Permanente on Clairmont Mesa drive and the 15 freeway. Several were combined projects with Tom Marosz and a few on my own. I was approached in December of 2015 to do a proposal by the art representative who had the contract for the hospital and adjacent buildings. I contacted Tom Marosz to collaborate on these as he has many public installations and experience in all aspects. (besides he is a heck of a lot of fun to work with!) This project was number seven and the only one I documented the entire process to share. "The Trees" are about 8' tall and span about 35' in the upstairs walkway at the Kaiser Ridgemont clinic adjacent to the new hospital. I start with an illustrator rendering as it can be read by the CAD software in water-jet. The entire project was cut with the files from the presentation. This process allows glass shapes that can not be done by hand and makes for a tremendous savings of materials by laying out like sewing on each color or material. This is all 1/4" commercial float glass and 1/4" aluminum. Denise works with me as assistant on most projects and is a huge asset to this team. Having a large studio really makes a job like this feasible. Many thanks to Tom and Denise for the hard work and friendship that make this possible.
