A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 04 17 17

Parents and Guardians,

I hope you and your student enjoyed the long weekend. Christy and I felt very fortunate to have our two adult sons home for the weekend as we were able to spend time together as a family. Those times are becoming more rare, and we relish them when they occur. I am sure many of you with adult children can relate to this.

Please take a few minutes to look over the information below. With May coming quickly, there are many important events and items coming up over the next six weeks. Have a great week!

Sincerely ,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

High School Volunteers Needed
Lovejoy Cub Scout Pack 358 is looking for high school volunteers, in need of volunteer hours, to help with the annual Blue & Gold banquet event on Saturday, April 22nd at Lovejoy Elementary from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

Blue & Gold is a celebration of the accomplishments of the Cub Scouts who have earned their next rank. Each scout will "crossover" a bridge and be welcomed into their next rank. The Webelos 2 will hold a special ceremony called the Arrow of Light and will be received into their new Boy Scout Troop. This is a big accomplishment for the Scouts who have worked hard all year.

Cub Scout Pack 358 serves all three Lovejoy elementary schools. We appreciate the help of our High School friends to assist in making this event a big success.

Interested volunteers: please email Michelle at [email protected]  with "B&G volunteer" in the subject line or text 214.801.3505.  Michelle will contact you with the event details. The deadline to respond is April 20th.

Student Recognition

The Red Ledger
The Red Ledger was recently honored with a Silver Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at the CSPA Spring National Convention. The Crown awards are the highest honors given by CSPA, and The Red Ledger was one of just 13 high schools in the nation to receive a crown in the digital news category.

The Red Ledger is also a finalist for the Online Pacemaker from the National Scholastic Press Association. The Pacemakers are widely regarded as the most prestigious awards in scholastic journalism, with some people unofficially referring to them as "the Pulitzer Prizes of student journalism." The Red Ledger was one of 50 finalists for online newspapers this year. The winners will be announced at the NSPA National Convention in April.

The Red Ledger is one of just eight publications in the nation to be named a finalist for both an Online Pacemaker and a Digital Crown. Special recognition goes to the outstanding leadership of editors-in-chief: Julia Vastano, Jillian Sanders and Hallie Fischer, and managing editor Caroline Smith.

LHS Yearbook
Our yearbook, The Leopard, has been recognized for excellence and featured in the 2017 Jostens Look Book, celebrating the best-of-the-best in yearbook design and coverage. The Leopard was one of only 418 yearbooks selected from approximately 3,000. The 2017 panel of judges, comprised of nationally recognized scholastic journalism professionals and award-winning yearbook advisers, selected the best examples of yearbook spreads and covers to make up the 296-page 2017 Look Book.

Also, congratulations to Eric Miller who won First Place in the 2017 Photo Contest sponsored by Jostens. The judges held the photographs to professional standards, and his photo won the "Yearbookers in Action" category and will be seen by thousands of schools across the country.

LHS Signing Day
The following Lovejoy athletes recently signed college athletic letters of intent:
  • Chad Hesson, Football - Adams State University, Alamosa, CO
  • George Butler, Lacrosse - Southern Virginia University, Buena Vista, VA
  • Cole Griffin, Lacrosse - University of Dallas, Dallas, TX
  • Logan Nitschke, Lacrosse - Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN
LHS Band Success
Please congratulate LHS Band Students on their two day success at UIL last week. This is the first time since 2012 that both performing bands received unanimous Division 1 ratings from all judges on Stage and in Sight Reading. Lovejoy Band is one of only two bands this year in the
Region to achieve this goal out of all 6A and 5A programs in the area.

LHS Varsity Baseball
The Varsity baseball team split 2 games last week with North Forney.  We lost 2-1 on Tuesday night and then bounced back with a 4-0 win over them on Friday night.  Jacob Terwilliger and Jacob Eschler were outstanding on the mound in the shutout.  The win pulls the Leopards to 5-5 in District.  We are currently in 4th place with 4 games left to play.  We will play Mesquite Poteet at Lovejoy this Tuesday, April 18th and then travel to Poteet on Friday.  Both games are at 7:30.

LHS Track & Field
Our Lovejoy Leopards are District Champions!
  • Lovejoy scored in each event
  • 22 of 26 athletes scored points
  • 16 athletes (including all relay teams) qualified for the Area Meet in 15 of the 17 events
  • We won 5 of the 11 running events, 2 of the 6 field events, and broke 1 school record (4x100m Relay).
Thanks for all the support each week, and especially to those who were able to stay until the meet was over to see us raise our first-ever Boys' Track and Field District Championship trophy.
