Cancer Prevention Program Featured in Boise Schools
Since 2014, over 6,000 4th and 8th grade students have participated in HHHU. Currently all eight junior high schools and 10 elementary schools in the Boise School District are participating in HHHU during the 2016-17 academic year.
On Friday, April 21st, Fairmont Health Teacher Cassie Tipton will lead her students through a lesson plan focused on the positive connection between increased physical activity, healthy food and beverage choices and reduced cancer risks.
St. Luke's Pathology Department provides students with a unique opportunity by donating cancerous and noncancerous tissue samples for the students to examine in small groups. Boise State University students and MSTI staff will guide the unique hands-on activity in which students examine cancerous and non-cancerous organ tissue samples. This small group activity aids the student's understanding of how health habits can impact organ function and increase cancer risks.
Note: Members of the local news media are invited to visit any of Ms. Tipton's following Health classes (please check-in at main school office upon arrival). Officials from St. Luke's MSTI, and undergraduate student interns from Boise State University wil be on hand for interviews, as will Ms. Tipton and some of her students.

- Speakers from St. Luke's MSTI and BSU reviewing topics such as, "What is cancer?", "How to increase & decrease cancer risk factors?" & the function of 4 organs: Liver, Lung, Colon & Kidney;
- Students in small group settings will be checking out the organ specimens (preserved in sealed bags), observing the cancerous and non-cancerous specimens, and specifying what they can do to reduce cancer risks;
- Boise State University students and MSTI staff will guide the unique hands-on activity in which students examine cancerous and non-cancerous organ tissue samples. This small group activity aids the student's understanding of how health habits can impact organ function andincrease cancer risks;
- Students will be sharing their observations with the class and identifying what unhealthy behavior they may have and what they can do to avoid the unhealthy behavior.
About HHHU:
According to NCI Cancer Trends Progress Report, 1/4 to 1/3 of new U.S. cancer cases are expected to be related to overweight condition; physical inactivity; and poor nutrition. Many lifestyle behaviors begin during adolescence and specific behaviors can contribute to cancer risks. Healthy Habits, Healthy U (HHHU) is an innovative Idaho school-based cancer prevention education program designed to teach and reinforce positive health habits in youth to help reduce such risks. HHHU was developed in collaboration with St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute, Boise State University and the Boise School District.
The two-day HHHU lesson plan is taught in fourth and eighth grade classes in the Boise School District. It focuses on the positive connection between increased physical activity, healthy food and beverage choices, and reduced cancer risks. The program integrates with and reinforces the current health curriculum, and the format features interactive learning featuring presentations, videos, action plans, as well as a unique hands-on activity in which students examine cancerous and non-cancerous organ tissue samples to aid understanding of how health habits can impact organ function and increase cancer risks.
The objective of
HHHU
is to increase awareness among youth about unhealthy lifestyles and cancer risks. The goal is to establish healthy lifestyles early in life to help lower rates of cancer in years to come.
