Summer Read to Seniors Program
Join us on Tuesdays this summer for an intergenerational reading program designed to help our young readers practice their skills during their time out of school. We will meet every Tuesday from June 21 through August 16 at 1:45pm in front of Winter Growth Adult Day Center (5460 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia) where elementary school aged children will spend time reading to and interacting with senior residents. This is not a drop off program; all children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring 2-3 age appropriate books for your child(ren) to read aloud. Readers will be paired with and rotate among different residents and should anticipate spending 10-15 minutes with each one. Space is limited. Please email or call Susan at 410-730-0770 to register.

More than 10K Kids in HoCo Qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch?
 |
|
Prepare for Success is a school supply drive created to ensure that Howard County students return to sc
hool with the tools they need to succeed. There are more than 10,000 kids in Howard County who qualify for free and reduced lunch-an indicator of poverty. The retail cost of basic school supplies ($60-$80 per student), presents a financial burden for many of these kids' families. Prepare for Success aims to cut that cost and move one step closer to eliminating the achievement gap. Having the right school supplies is a critical first step to help a student achieve higher literacy levels, improve academic performance, and graduate. It also enables schools to operate more effectively.
For $25.00 with bulk purchasing and donated supplies, Prepare for Success can help assure that a student will return to school - prepared for success.
The goal: For the 2016-2017 school year, Prepare for Success expects to provide over 2,500 students from pre-school through high school with new backpacks full of supplies.
Drop off your school supply donations at Kahler Hall through August 20.

CoHo Grill Has a New Owner
Columbia Association (CA) is happy to welcome Thomas Zippelli, the new owner of The CoHo Grill, a restaurant and bar at CA's Hobbit's Glen Golf Club. Zippelli, who grew up in Ellicott City, brings more than a decade of experience that has included roles in highly regarded restaurants in New York City and California. After attending culinary school in Rhode Island, Zippelli worked at Eleven Madison Park in Manhattan. For the past two and a half years, he was at The French Laundry in Napa Valley, most recently as its saucier. Both restaurants have rec
eived the maximum of three stars from the prestigious Michelin Guide. "I'm happy to be back home and am really looking forward to bringing a restaurant to - and for - the Howard County community," Zippelli said. "Coho Grill will be a great place both for golfers and for the entire community, with an interesting and ever-changing menu of upscale casual American food for lunch and dinner, a fun wine list, really good cocktails, an awesome outdoor area and a wonderful atmosphere." Columbia Association also wishes to thank Chuck Sachs, the longtime owner of The CoHo Grill who worked in a restaurant at Hobbit's Glen while a teenager and ultimately founded his own restaurant there, heading it for the past 23 years. "I'm so grateful to the golf community, the neighborhood, the local residents, everybody who's ever visited us and, of course, the staff," Sachs said. Hobbit's Glen Golf Club is a semi-private club offering a plush course, lush green fairways, excellent practice facilities and incredible dining, perfect for after-round conversation with fellow members and for entertaining friends or clients. Carved through and around the Maryland timber, this course is maintained with an astute attention to detail. The natural features of the area of the site create an unparalleled golfing adventure. This par-72 golf course plays just over 7,100 yards from the back tees and 5,400 from the front. It has four par 5 holes and four par 3 holes. There are four sets of tees for players of all levels. It is located at 11130 Willowbottom Drive in Columbia. For more information, please visit ColumbiaAssociation.org/hobbitsglen.
