Dear St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School Families,

Oh the fun I had last Saturday night! The performance of Seussical Jr. took me to a magical place!  Like the words in Dr. Seuss books, the production of Seussical Jr. brought out our students' wonderfully rich and creative talents and skills. I could not believe the amazing talent and energy on display from the opening scene to the last. Part nonsense and part fantasy, but all fun, students in kindergarten through 8th grade danced, sang, and performed their way into our hearts and captured our imagination.

As you know, this was our first attempt to bring a school wide theater arts production to our school and I hope this will begin a tradition of annual performances.  The great performances on stage and the enjoyable experience for the audience were made possible by the passion and hard work of Mrs. Lambert and Stagelight Family Productions.  Mrs. Lambert created the vision and managed the administrative tasks while the Stagelight team worked with students over the last five weeks to prepare them for the awesome performances we enjoyed on stage.  Despite talented and committed leadership, the production would not have been possible without generous sponsors, the behind the scenes work by parents during the weeks leading up to the shows, as well as their efforts on stage and in the lobby, before, during, and after the final curtain.

Everyone who attended, participated, and supported the production will agree that it was a phenomenal success. Success measured by how much the kids learned, how much they were inspired to try something new, and how much fun they had.  This is a great example of good things that happen when people work collaboratively to achieve a goal.  The kids benefit!  I wish to express my appreciation to Mrs. Lambert, the Stagelight team, and all the volunteers who dedicated their time to make this production a success. Thank you parents for supporting our show and our children.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." Get excited about next year because, "These things are fun and fun is good!"

DIOCESE NEWS
A Letter from Superintendent Dhuyvetter
Dear Parents,

We at the Department of Catholic Schools were shocked and devastated by the shooting at North Park Elementary School yesterday in San Bernardino.  We pray for the victims as well as the soul of the shooter.
Please know that the first priority of our Catholic schools is for safety and well-being of our students.  Our campuses have effective security and safety plans in relation to all that enter.  Please contact your school for further information on the safety precautions that are in place to protect your child.

Sincerely,
Greg Dhuyvetter

SCHOOL NEWS
Five Signs that Spring has Arrived!
The splendor of spring is evident - flowers are blooming, temperatures are getting warmer, and days are getting longer.  On the downside, pollen is triggering seasonal allergies and students are getting lax about dress and grooming policies.  Areas that need improvement include:

For boys, haircuts and wearing belts with pants.

For girls, no makeup or nail polish.

Shoe options are black, white, gray, navy, green, maroon, or green leather or canvas.  White socks must cover the entire ankle. Cell phones may not be visible or used at school.  Please refer to the Handbook for a complete description of dress and grooming expectations and review them with your child. They will be enforced at school.
Camp Wolfpack - Summer Program
Camp Wolf Pack - STEM Challenge provides students entering Kindergarten through Grade 8 with opportunities for safe risk-taking, exploration, discovery, and growth in a nurturing, supportive, and inclusive school community during the summer months. Our goal is to develop minds while creating memories that last a lifetime!

SFAYL App
Given the huge increase in adoption of smart phones and other mobile devices, and with the understanding that mobile users generally have a preference for accessing data and web content through apps, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School created the SFAYL Mobile App.  The App provides convenient, easily accessible information to our school community, as well as push notifications and reminders.

To download the app, please follow the directions below:
  1. Go to the App Store or Google Play store on your phone and search for: SFAYL
  2. Download the App
  3. Slide through the one-time welcome message.
  4. When prompted
  5. ALLOW PUSH NOTIFICATIONS.
  6. Click the REMINDERS button and press the cog icon in the top right corner.  Then select which lists you would like to be subscribed to for push notifications.
Kindergarten Orientation
Kindergarten Orientation will be held in the Fr. Seamus Glynn Center Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 pm.
Teacher Appreciation Week May 15 - 19, 2017
Thank you to those that have sent in your donations and volunteered to help with your classes during Teacher Appreciation Week  May 15-19 . If you need a form, one is attached here. We expect the week to be a memorable one for our teachers and staff. In order to make it happen we rely on our annual collection of a voluntary  $10 donation per child to cover expenses for the week. This is the first and only collection for TAW we have done this year. You may send in cash or check (payable to St. Francis of Assisi School). If you have more than one child at the school, you may write one check per family. Please include your children's names and classes on the form. Please submit all donations by  April 7  so the money can be counted and volunteers secured prior to leaving for break.

If you have already signed up or would like to provide a raffle item to the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, please drop the item off in the front office labeled "TAW - Tracy Foye" anytime from now until  May 12. No item is too small. The raffle is such a fun tradition for the luncheon that everyone enjoys. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Any questions regarding TAW can be directed to Tracy Foye.
Carline Reminders!
  • There is no drop-off on the hill up to East Side Park or at East Side Park.  Students must be accompanied by an adult onto campus.
  • Vehicles may not pull out of a parking stall during carline hours from 7:35 am to 8:05 am.
  • Drop-off is the red curbed area and the coned area only.  If your passenger doors are facing Santa Clara - you are not at the drop off area and students may not exit the vehicle.
  • Please have all drivers review the full list of carline rules.  We appreciate your cooperation in keeping all our students safe.
Found Bracelet!
A bracelet was found at one of the Seussical Jr. performances last weekend.  If you think it might be yours, please email the business office at  sseariac@sfayl.org to identify it.

The Garden Club
Students Are Growing at
St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School

By: Mia F.

The Garden Club was started in 2015 by then sixth graders Ciara C. and Ryan B. who wanted to create a way for students to help the environment while here at school.  They took the space behind the Science Lab and converted it into a small bed for plants.  You can see the space they turned into their own garden as you pass through carline each morning.

The founders of the Garden Club are now in eighth grade, and they have passed their club down to sixth graders Ava C., Tatum L., Audrey P., Katie P., and Angelina P. who feel a responsibility to keep the club and the garden alive.  "We wanted to make it thrive-we didn't want to just leave it," says the sixth graders.

The Garden Club is assisted by Mrs. Kridle, the 6-8th grade science teacher, who supplies the group, with gardening tools, seeds, and other equipment as well as the information needed to plant. Club members plants things like sunflowers, tomatoes, carrots, watermelon, and even pumpkin. However, these plants won't even begin to thrive until Fall. "Gardening requires a lot of patience," the girls say. The group has big expectations for the garden going forward. They want to see healthy, tall plants for years to come.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Attention all 7th Grade Boys!
Servite Pre High School Placement Test
The "Pre-HSPT" is designed to benefit 7th grade students by allowing them to practice a scaled version of the Entrance Exam prior to the official admissions process in January, 2018. It is especially valuable in identifying areas that may need some work. Depending on results and interest, Servite may follow-up the Pre-HSPT with enrichment offerings during the summer in order to assist students in preparing for the rigors of high school coursework.

We will be administering Scholastic Testing Service's PHSPT on  Saturday, April 29, from 8:00 am. - 12:00 pm and results will be distributed and explained at our HSPT Information Night on  Tuesday, May 16, at 7:00 pm in the Servite Theater.

A fee of $25 covers the cost of test administration, scoring, and a snack on the day of the exam.   Click HERE to register.   (Please note that results are not used for admissions purposes for the 2018-2019 school year.)
