Check out this month's fun and engaging card making workshop! Our theme is Summer Fun Cards and you will make three projects to take home. Summer Read to Seniors Program
  
Join us on Tuesdays this summer for an intergenerational reading program designed to help our young readers practice their skills during their time out of school. We will meet every Tuesday from June 21 through August 16 at 1:45pm in front of Winter Growth Adult Day Center (5460 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia) where elementary school aged children will spend time reading to and interacting with senior residents. This is not a drop off program; all children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring 2-3 age appropriate books for your child(ren) to read aloud. Readers will be paired with and rotate among different residents and should anticipate spending 10-15 minutes with each one. Space is limited. Please email or call Susan at 410-730-0770 to register.

You Can Mentor & Tutor HoCo Students During the School Year?
 
Make a difference! Help enhance the academic and social development of identified students in schools near you through a consistent, supportive relationship with a child.
 
A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring -Tutoring Inc. is actively seeking adult volunteers to mentor and tutor students in local Howard County schools for the 2016-2017school year. Volunteers must be available weekdays during the daytime hours to meet one-on-one with an assigned student during the school day or with students in small groups in after school programs. A minimum commitment of one school year is required.
 
Learn more about A-OK's volunteer opportunities at an information session on August 10th or September 21st at 1pm at the Hawthorne Center, 6175 Sunny Spring, Columbia.

Damaged Utility Pedestals Near You?

If you see broken or damaged Verizon or Comcast pedestals or above ground wires in your neighborhood, please report them to the village office. Please email us a photo which will help us identify ownership of the box and provide the address where the pedestal or wires are located as well, i.e. closest street address. Residents are encouraged to report any concerns to the village office such as graffiti, fallen trees or branches, exposed cables, etc. and we will make sure the complaint is forwarded to the responsible party. Who Ya Gonna Call?

We frequently take calls from residents wondering who they need to call to address a concern. This handy guide will help.

When the streetlight on your road is out:
Call BGE at 800-685-0123


When there is a dead tree between the curb and sidewalk in front of your home:

This is most likely a County street tree. Call HoCo Highways at 410-313-7450

When t
here is a car on your street that is untagged, or the tags have expired:
Call the Police to report, 410-313-2200 or report to the village staff with tag# and location.


When there is a dog off its leash, or barking loudly, or acting aggressively:
Call HoCo Animal Control at 410-313-2780

When your neighbor plays their music too loud, or too late at night:
This is a police matter. Call the non-emergency number, 410-313-2200


Then the tot lot has graffiti or damage:
Call the Village office, 410-730-0770 or directly to CA Open Space Management at 410-312-6330 or
open.space@columbiaassociation.org  

Sweet Gum Balls In Your Yard?
 
It is each homeowner's responsibility to keep the sidewalks and the curb area adjacent to their property free of debris, including those brown, spikey "gumballs" that the Sweet Gum trees drop once or twice each year. They may be bagged up and placed out in paper bags for yard waste collection.

Upcoming Meetings
Architectural Committee Meetings

Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require approval of the Village Architectural Committee (AC). The AC typically meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm to review applications. The deadline to submit applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date. Upcoming meeting is scheduled for: 8/16.  

Village Board Meetings

The next meeting of the Village Board is scheduled for August 16 at 7pm. Approved Agendas and Meeting Minutes are/will be available on our website.
