Let’s Not Let the Republicans Make the Obamacare Replacement Debate About the Congressional Budget Office—Fewer People Will Be Covered and Many Will See Big Cost Increases

From ASIPP Keynote Speaker
Robert Laszewski

If you carve a huge chunk of revenue out of Obamacare and shift more subsidies to the middle class it should not be a surprise that the lower income folks will pay the price

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has estimated that 14 million of people would lose coverage in 2018, 21 million in 2020, and 24 million in 2026 if the House Republican plan is allowed to significantly amend the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare).

Seema Verma Confirmed as Head of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

WASHINGTON—Seema Verma, President Donald Trump’s pick to oversee the Medicare and Medicaid programs, won Senate confirmation in a largely party-line vote on Monday, placing an advocate of overhauling Medicaid at the program’s helm.

With Ms. Verma installed in a 55-43 vote, the Trump administration is set to move forward with dismantling parts of the Affordable Care Act through executive action, a strategy Republicans see as a pillar of their plan to overhaul health care.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which Ms. Verma will head, oversees health insurance programs for more than 100 million Americans, but it also runs key parts of the Affordable Care Act.

Ms. Verma, a health policy consultant, made a name for herself as the architect of Indiana’s Medicaid expansion program under then-Gov. Mike Pence, which that state administered through a federal waiver. Ms. Verma struck a deal with  the Obama administration allowing Indiana to charge enrollees under the expansion monthly premiums.

The High Cost of Health Care in America

The United States spends more on health care as a percentage of GDP than other developed countries, but Americans are less healthy.

America spent more than 17% of its gross domestic product on medical care and drugs in 2014. Yet our life expectancy at birth was only 78.8 years according to the latest data available--lower than most developed countries.

Why does health care cost so much, and why aren’t we healthier?

FDA Advisory Panel Says Benefits of Painkiller Opana ER No Longer Outweigh Risks

The benefits of an opioid painkiller linked to a 2015 HIV outbreak in Indiana no longer outweigh the risks, a panel of advisers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concluded Tuesday.

The FDA asked the experts to review the drug, Endo Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s Opana ER, after concerns mounted about its safety. The FDA cited particular concerns about the 2015 HIV outbreak in rural Austin, Ind., which was caused by opioid addicts sharing needles while injecting Opana ER.

The panel of advisers voted 18 to 8 that the painkiller’s benefits no longer outweigh its risks, with many saying the drug’s formulation appeared to encourage particularly risky forms of injection drug abuse that can help spread viruses including HIV.

Join ASIPP for this informative webinar that will not only review the coding and regulatory changes for pain management practices in 2017, but take next steps to evaluate the impact these modifications have had on your billing, documentation and reimbursement.   For instance, if you haven’t changed the way you document moderate sedation, you could be putting your practice at risk.

There are major alterations in documentation requirements that, if done correctly, may influence your work flow and the time to record these services.

Verify that the necessary notations have been included in your epidural procedure notes to support the codes you are reporting.  Urine drug testing continues to rank high on all payers’ audit plans so it is crucial that all EMR templates and billing tools have been updated appropriately to meet medical necessity requirements for this controversial controlled substance management tool.

WEBINAR FEE: $185

After Record Year for Fatal Overdoses, New York City Targets Opioids

New York City will spend $38 million annually to combat an opioid epidemic that killed more than 1,000 New Yorkers last year, city officials said Monday.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the initiative, dubbed HealingNYC, would reduce the number of opioid deaths by 35% during the next five years. The funding will support the distribution of 100,000 kits of naloxone, the drug-overdose-reversal drug, to treatment programs, city shelters and pharmacies. All 23,000 New York Police Department patrol officers also will be equipped with the kits.

Chemical weapon for sale: A synthetic opioid from China that will kill heroin users

For a few thousand dollars, Chinese companies offer to export a powerful chemical that has been killing unsuspecting drug users and is so lethal that it presents a potential terrorism threat, an Associated Press investigation has found.

The AP identified 12 Chinese businesses that said they would export the chemical — a synthetic opioid known as carfentanil — to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium and Australia for as little as $2,750 a kilogram, no questions asked.

Burnout Eroding Physicians' Sense of Calling

HealthDay News — For physicians across specialties, burnout is associated with reduced odds of a sense of calling, according to a study published in the  Mayo Clinic Proceedings.1

Andrew J. Jager, from the American Medical Association in Chicago, and colleagues surveyed US physicians across all specialties to examine the correlation between degree of burnout and physicians' sense of calling.
