The OLMA Overview -- April 6, 2017
|
|
This morning, we inducted 15 new students into the Mother Patricia Gaynor Chapter of the National Honor Society. The ceremony was lovely and I thank everyone who was here to help make today special for these hardworking students.
Later tonight, we'll showcase OLMA arts as we auction off projects made by each of our students. I continue to be amazed by the artwork our students create under the direction of Mrs. Joan Helms, our extremely talented art teacher. Tonight's silent auction begins at 6:30 PM, so I hope to see you all here.
Spring sports are now under way. Tomorrow at 4 PM, our softball team will battle Cape May Tech. Come on out and support our team tomorrow and whenever you can. Our athletes are counting on us. Schedules are online in the Spring Sports section of our website.
Next week is a short one with only two full school days before we depart for Easter and Spring Break. I wish you all a peaceful and joyous holiday and look forward to everyone returning with a renewed sense of energy as we embark on the final months of this school year. Happy Easter!

Sukhmani "Suk" Minhas, Class of 2018
|
|
In just a few minutes of conversation with Sukhmani Minhas, the compassion she feels for others is hard to miss -- as is her smile. She takes a genuine interest in those around her and always has a word of kindness or encouragement to share. Her demeanor will serve her well as she plans to study psychology and pursue a career as a nurse practitioner or physician's assistant.
She's already getting some great practice thanks to volunteer work she's doing at Inspira. "I've been helping out every Saturday for almost two years and really enjoy talking to the patients," said Suk. "I also stock supplies, deliver meals and even work in the lobby, but I mostly enjoy keeping the patients company."
One little-known fact about Suk is that she is quite the traveler. Her dad's job requires lots of driving, so she often goes along for the ride. To date, she has racked up visits to 19 states and intends to hit the rest at some point. Her favorite trip so far was a family vacation to Maine during the summer. "I love it there," she said. "It has such a peaceful climate and is beautiful, especially in Acadia National Park."
Suk loves to write and is also very artistic. These are two skills she gets plenty of time to practice at OLMA -- a school she chose for its accepting, supportive and relaxing environment. "The teachers here really care and are always willing to stop what they're doing to listen when needed," she said. "I'm grateful to my family for sending me to school here."
Suk also loves music -- and the more electronic, the better. She's especially fond of K-Pop and says that one of the idols, Min Yoongi inspires her. "He has gone through a lot in his life and, for a while, became very depressed," she said. "Instead of giving up, he turned to his music. It's so important for people to realize that no matter how tough things get, they just need to wait it out. I believe that time really does heal all."
A licensed psychologist couldn't have said it any better. Clearly, you are on the right path. Thanks Suk.

She's Headed to California!
|
|
The Class of 2017 is racking up an impressive slate of college acceptances and scholarships. Hot off the press is Elizabeth Lam's commitment to the University of Southern California. With a 16% acceptance rate and 60,000 applicants for a few thousand spots, this is quite an accomplishment.
In other college news this week, Kate Olson was accepted to George Washington University. No final decision just yet for Kate, but she was excited to add George Washington to her acceptance list. We will keep you updated on other commitments as they happen. This is a very exciting time.

Thanks to the generosity of all of the OLMA students, families and friends who donated candy and other supplies, the "littles" at Big Brothers Big Sisters are in for a huge surprise. The baskets pictured below will be delivered this week -- just in time for the organization's annual Easter party. Many thanks to Mrs. C and the seniors who led this effort.
