TC Travelers Sweep Houghton Tournament

Story in the words of Tom Roach:

The TC Travelers, a local men's senior travel hockey team active since the "Bubble Days" in 1987, traveled to Houghton over St. Patrick's Day weekend to compete in their 17th straight Copper Country Old Timers Tournament.

For the past three years, the team has participated in two age classes: the 50+ Legends and the 60+ Classics. While the 60+ guys won their class for the second year in a row, it took nine long years for the 50+ guys to finally win back the Legends trophy - something they've been trying to do since being the first team to win it in that class's inaugural year in 2008. It's an old-time hockey weekend, with games played at three different rinks, including the old Armory in Calumet (now named The Coliseum) and "The Dee," long recognized as "the birthplace of professional hockey."

On Saturday night, some of the boys managed to get standing room tickets to watch Michigan Tech defeat Bowling Green in the second overtime to win the WCHA Playoff Tournament.  After a wee bit of celebration into the wee hours, the team was up for an early departure for the long drive back to TC, just in time to make the O-League games at Centre Ice.  What a solid hockey weekend!

Monthly Medical Memo

Concussion Caution: What You Need to Know

The Michigan High School Athletic Association estimates that 5 - 10 percent of teenage athletes will experience a concussion in any given sport season. Concussion is a form of a traumatic brain injury caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head. Because the frontal lobes of the brain continue to develop until age 25, it is vital to manage youth concussions very conservatively to ensure the best neurological development and outcomes.

Up to 70 percent of student concussions heal in 7 to 10 days. For those that don't heal in that time, one-third can take up to six months for all post-concussion symptoms to resolve. Returning to activity too soon could result in neurological damage.

Here are a few facts to keep in mind.
  • Less than 10 percent of sport-related concussions involve a loss of consciousness.
  • 78 percent of concussions occur during games, as opposed to practices.
  • The most common symptoms immediately following a concussion are headache (85 percent) and dizziness (70 - 80 percent).
  • Other physical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, balance problems, blurry vision, or sensitivity to noise or light. Also watch for difficulty in thinking clearly, irritability or mood swings and sleep issues.
  • An estimated 47 percent of athletes do not report feeling any symptoms after a concussive blow.
 (Source: MHSAA)

Seek medical evaluation from your doctor if you notice any of the symptoms listed above. Cognitive, balance and eye exams can help confirm or rule out a concussion. Imaging, such as a CT scan, is often performed to rule out other brain injuries.

A physician should clear you or your student before returning to normal activity. Munson Medical Center Physical Therapy has a return-to-play protocol that helps doctors determine if an athlete is ready to return to their sport.
