A big thank you to everyone who participated in the Fruitvale Litter March on March 18!
Leverage Your FOSC Donation on May 4th!

Thursday, May 4 is a special "day of giving" for local nonprofits when your donation can be multiplied. In both 2015 and 2016, your donations to FOSC via East Bay Gives earned our organization over $5,000 in cash prizes. (East Bay Community Foundation is confident that the glitches encountered last May have been fixed.)

So please mark your calendar ... not just for May 4, but for 4 p.m.--the start of the Environmental Hour. If FOSC gets more donors than any other environmental organization between 4-5 p.m., we win an additional $3,000! The process will be simple: Go to our website, www.sausalcreek.org , and press the DONATE button. It will connect you to a special donation page for East Bay Gives. Select "Friends of Sausal Creek" from the pull down menu and put in your particulars. Thank you!
Act Locally on Earth Day

This year the actual Earth Day, April 22, conveniently falls on a Saturday. FOSC has opportunities for you to get your hands dirty from the hills to the estuary. Find a workday near you on the FOSC event calendar or on the city's Earth Day web page.

If you want to bring out a group to volunteer on a FOSC workday, please contact the site leader referenced on the online calendar. All volunteers under 18 must bring City of Oakland and FOSC waivers signed by their parent or guardian.
Seeking Core Group of Volunteers: New Pallids Crew!

We are  starting our third year of restoration work at the Chabot Space and Science Center to help save the endangered pallid manzanita (Arctostaphylos pallida) from becoming extinct. In 1995 there were 21 pallid manzanitas at this site and today only one of the original pallid manzanitas is still alive. Friends of Sausal Creek and the East Bay California Native Plant Society chapter are coordinating restoration work with the Chabot Space and Science Center to bring the population back to 21 pallid manzanitas.

Workdays are 9 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of the month. We are asking volunteers to commit to six workdays over the next year. Each workday will begin with an educational unit before we start the habitat restoration work.

Topics covered will include the pallid manzanita life cycle, the conditions where it grows, and threats to its survival. You will learn about the native plant community at the site and how to identify invasive and native plants, including pallid manzanita seedlings. Also covered will be habitat restoration techniques, monitoring protocols, and germination experiment design.

Please RSVP to Jill Miller at [email protected] or (510) 853-3533 . The first meeting will be on Saturday, April 8 at 9 a.m. located at 10000 Skyline Blvd, Oakland .
New Nursery Manager -- Where are You?

We have not yet found our new nursery manager. This is a part-time position and requires someone who is self-motivated and has experience growing California native plants. Please help by passing on this job announcement to your networks. Thank you!
Friend of the Month: Andrew Aldrich

Sunlight glimmering through redwoods, majestic oaks framing the trail, creek water rushing through the canyon--Andrew Aldrich's photos transport us to the magical places we love in the watershed. Thank you, Andrew, for capturing those moments that sometimes echo our own experiences and other times allow us to see flows and angles of light that we missed. We appreciate Andrew generously letting FOSC share his photos in this newsletter and elsewhere.

You can see some of Andrew's photos, as well as those of others, on the  Sausal Creek Watershed Flickr Group that Andrew started. Join and add your own!

Red-Shouldered Hawk

Common name: Red-shouldered hawk
Scientific name:  Buteo lineatus

Easier to hear than see, red-shouldered hawks have a distinctive screaming cry. They eat small mammals, birds, and herps, Because of their proximity to human habitation, they likely eat a lot of rats. Last year the hawks nesting in Dimond Canyon raised a chick that frequented the new restoration area in Dimond Park, but it was later found dead. Hopefully it didn't die of rat poison, but that is one good reason not to use rodenticide, as it can cause secondary poisoning. For more info see www.raptorsarethesolution.org.

Missed the March Mushroom Madness? Worry Not!

Thanks so much to Damon Tighe for his fascinating fungus talk and iNaturalist training on March 8. Damon invites you to view the slides from his talk here.

While we are on the subject, bookmark the website of the California Center for Natural History to find other fun events by Damon and his CCNH colleagues.
Is the Creek Safe?

Why is Sausal Creek in Dimond Canyon posted for contamination? Is it safe to go in the creek? NO! is the short answer. Dangerous levels of bacteria have recently been present in the creek. Due to heavy rains and one clogged sewer line, there was an accidental discharge of sewage into Sausal Creek in mid-March. The discharge was almost directly under the Leimert Bridge.

Kudos Korner

Kudos to Eagle Scout candidate Lane Bentley for creating a fantastic new trail on our nursery grounds that provides access to our evolving native plant demonstration garden. Working with a steep slope, Lane and his team created an interesting route that is level and safe. Thanks to the weed barrier and mulch that they installed, it should also be low maintenance. We look forward to adding this native plant tour to our nursery field trips!
Seeking New Board Members

FOSC is looking for a few people to join our board of directors. In particular, we seek to recruit people with experience in finance, human resources, fundraising, grant writing, education, or financial management. We are especially looking for board members who live in Fruitvale to be leaders as we move forward with projects from the Walkable Watershed Concept Plan. But don't rule yourself out if you don't fit these descriptions. Our board of directors is a dynamic, committed, fun community of people from a variety of backgrounds helping to steer our model watershed group into the future. Please contact Board Secretary Richelle Jacobs at [email protected] or (510) 531-1411 for more information on what board involvement entails.
