The Pirate Treasure
celebrating the excellence of Pine Tree ISD

Pine Tree Primary - Our Littlest Pirates

During Pine Tree Innovation Showcase, a few of our bilingual friends in Mrs. Ruiz' class demonstrated how they are learning to build using robotics. These students were able to follow instructions and solve problems while building their models.  They also used their ipads to modify and run their programs using Bluetooth technology. Students built a helicopter, a race car, and a robot that can drive and turn in different directions, plus a model of a bee flying around a flower full of pollen.

Parkway Elementary.... Subtraction Clinic

2nd graders at Parkway Elementary have been sick with Subtraction-itus.  The doctor ordered the students to visit the Subtraction Clinic on March 10 to be treated.  The children received a shot of "pound it out and count it up", a prescription for "regrouping", and a big dose of "math action words".  The objective was for all students to leave the clinic with a "clean bill of health", feeling happy, and having a great grasp of subtraction.

Mrs. Higginbotham recently had a "Book Tasting" in her room. It was created to help students "taste" different genres within their reading levels and interests. She created a restaurant in her classroom with table settings, music, and a menu.

Students were given the opportunity to choose from books from the genres of fiction, literary non-fiction, expository, persuasive and poetry. After making their selection students were given five minutes to complete their menu. The menu consisted of questions about genre and opened questions that are part of the Lead4ward Academy.

This creative activity gave students a classroom filled with great ambiance paired with high-interest books and students were fully engaged and on task while discovering new authors and text.

Mrs. Higginbotham also featured her "Book Tasting" at this year's Innovation Showcase.

PTJH Receives New Keyboards for iPads

The JH ELA department received new keyboards for the students to use with their iPads during class. Physical keyboards enable students to type faster and offers more features. Pine Tree High School News

High School Motoring toward Graduation Day

One round of STAAR testing has been completed and Pine Tree High School is motoring toward Graduation Day on May 26.

Students were busy last week with Biology, English I and English II STAAR, keeping teachers and administrators bustling with room changes, students in and out and other activities that always accompany testing days.

The testing cycle went very well, according to high school counselors, and now they are preparing for another round in just a few weeks. After that, graduation activities take center stage as well as planning underclassmen schedules for next year.

The Junior League was hosted for lunch on Wednesday, bringing a large number of important guests to the campus. They were greeted by BUCS and then serenaded by band and choir members along with seeing various other student groups display things from their classes. Each guest was also given a special coin minted and poured in the Robotics and Engineering room.

Seniors are ready for graduation with only six weeks remaining, and over 250 of them are ready to don their caps and gowns on May 26 and cross that stage into their future. Counselors are busy working on Top 10, Top 10 Percent and other items that will appear in the graduation program. The valedictorian and salutatorian will also be announced in the next few weeks.. Students are busy finishing their classwork so that there is nothing in front of them but exciting Senior activities.

Sports is coming to a close for the year, with softball, baseball and track still having regular season events. Track will have district next week, and softball and baseball will finish toward the end of the month. Golf finished district Tuesday and will send individuals to regionals in a couple of weeks.

Coach Robin Herber has been named the Longview News Journal Coach of the Year, according to Athletic Director Coach Jody Berryhill.  He said this was a great honor for Coach Herber and he is proud of the effort her team gave this year.

The yearbook has been sent for final printing and will be ready for distribution on May 13.  Almost all of the 200 books have been sold, so students who still have not purchased one will need to do so soon.

Band is still competing on different levels, and choir performed this week at the Belcher Center in a special concert. Art is also still having students complete work for various contests and competitions.

Students will soon cast ballots for class officers for the coming year, and Senior Superlatives and Mr. and Miss PTHS and Most Likely to Succeed winners will be announced.

Pine Tree High School is motoring toward the end of the year and graduation. It should be a wonderful ride into summer.
