A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

The Passover Seder is filled with enough symbolism to keep psychologists and philosophers busy for their entire lives.  Because of the issues of the day, two seemingly unrelated parts of the Seder, when joined together, have a message to impart.

The first comes at the very beginning of the Maggid section of the Seder, just before the Four Questions.  The leader of the Seder holds up the Matzah and says:

Behold the bread of affliction that our ancestors ate while in Egypt.
Let anyone who is hungry come and eat.....
Today we are here;
next year in the Land of Israel.
Today we are slaves;
next year we shall be free.

As we sit down to reenact our slavery and our redemption, the Haggadah's exhortation that we invite the hungry to our Seder reminds us that the story is not limited to our current experience.  In part, the intent of the annual ritual is to remind us that we must take care of those among us who are less fortunate.  Our empathy derives from our own slave experience which is embedded in our DNA.

However it isn't until much later in the Seder that the ability to actually invite others into the Seder is realized.  The second seemingly unrelated part occurs when we open the door for Elijah.  But is the door opened only for the Prophet?  I think that we actually are using Elijah as a pretext.  What we are really demonstrating at this point in the Seder is that our homes are open.  Open to ideas, open to the community, open to those in need.  When we open the door, we are telling the world that we are open to it.  We are physically inviting in those hungry people that we referenced at the very beginning of the Seder.

The lesson here is that ultimately it is not enough to say: "Let anyone who is hungry come in and eat....."  At some point we need to actually open the door to let them in.

There are many lessons to be learned from our various Passover rituals. We were slaves. We have been the stranger.  We have experienced freedom.  Whatever our individual experiences, our past begs us to help others who are less fortunate that us.

Promise to help. Open your heart. Open your arms. Open your doors.  Next year in Jerusalem.

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Kasher v'Sameach - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

See who Rabbi Jay bumped into at the AIPEC Conference:

Rabbi Jay will be at the JCC on Tuesdays and will have office hours from 1:00 - 3:00 PM.  Drop in to chat (call the office to make sure he is in and not out on an emergency 609-492-4090) or make an appointment with him (973-865-9534).

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

Sunday morning's Passover Workshop with Murray Speigel was a rousing success.

Participant Joann Ramer sent a note to Rabbi Jay with her thoughts: "Just wanted to let you know how much we all enjoyed listening to Murray Spiegel speak about Passover. He was one of the best speakers I have ever listened to. His information was creative and fun.  His style was exceptionally entertaining.. Thank you for organizing the event...We look forward to many more interesting programs.

SELLING OF HAMETZ

The Torah prohibits us from owning any type of Hametz during the festival of Pesach. In principle, a person has the option of consuming all his Hametz before Pesach, giving it away, destroying it or renouncing all ownership of it. In practice it is often not possible to dispose of all the Hametz before Pesach. Moreover, a person may have Chametz in his possession of which he is unaware. As a response to this situation the practice of "Selling the Chametz" began nearly two thousand years ago during the time of the Mishnah. Originally, each Jew would sell his own Chametz to a non-Jew and there would be an exchange of goods and money. Nowadays, in order to ensure that all the legal requirements of a contract of sale are satisfied, people usually make the Rabbi their agent for selling the Hametz to a non-Jew. After Pesach the Rabbi buys back the Hametz though this is not made a specific condition of the sale. It should be noted that Hametz, which remains in one's possession during Pesach, is prohibited for use afterwards.

In order to ensure that no Chametz remains in your possession over Pesach, please fill in the attached form so our agent, Rabbi Jay, can sell it to Leslie, our office manager.  HAMETZ
