Upcoming NAMI Smarts for Advocacy Training & Regional Meeting in Sacramento-April 17th
AdvocacyNews

NAMI California and NAMI Sacramento will hold a NAMI Smarts for Advocacy Training and Regional meeting on Monday, April 17th in Sacramento. We would like to extend the invite to surrounding affiliates and members.

NAMI Smarts for Advocacy is a popular hands-on advocacy training program that helps people living with mental illness, friends and family transform their passion and lived experience into skillful grassroots advocacy. Whenever we hold these meetings we also reach out to local Behavioral Health staff to learn how members can be more involved with the MHSA public planning process. Attendees will receive information on NAMI California's legislative priorities as well as have the opportunity to learn how to contact local policymakers and tools to conduct a successful meeting.

We have a couple of different modules and usually do a max of two per session. These meetings can also include a brief legislative breakdown and MHSA/Behavioral Health Panel discussion.

Module 1: Telling a compelling story that is inspiring and makes an "ask" in 90 seconds.
Module 2: Writing an effective email, making an elevator speech and making an impactful phone call.
Module 3: Orchestrating a successful meeting with an elected official.

The unique step-by-step, skill-building design of NAMI Smarts is effective with a wide range of participants-from those who are new to advocacy to individuals with more experience. Participants routinely share that they've never been able to condense their story or made a clear "ask" and, with NAMI Smarts, they were able to. Lobbyists who represent NAMI State Organizations or mental health coalitions love this program-they see participants come out confident and able to share their story in a way that moves policymakers.

NAMI California is training its own NAMI Smarts Train the Trainer team in D.C. at the end of April. That means that we can begin training teachers in all areas of the state soon after. That scheduling hasn't begun yet. To be eligible for the training, candidates need to have previously participated in a training such as the one being held in Sacramento on April 17th.

To register for the April 17th training in Sacramento or for more information please contact Marcel Harris at (916) 567-0163 or send an email to   [email protected]

Are You Ready for Mental Health Month in May?

During May, NAMI and the rest of the country will raise awareness of mental health. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care.
In 2017, NAMI will promote the theme " Into Mental Health: Inspired, Informed, Involved" throughout all awareness events, including Mental Health Month. The campaign will focus on the power of starting inspiring conversations, getting informed to know the right thing to say and becoming involved with NAMI activities. W e're asking everyone to join with us to say, "I'm in to mental health!"

As a NAMI leader, you play a significant role in growing the movement. NAMI has created resources you may use to make Mental Health Month as successful as possible:
  • Message guide and style sheet
  • Social media toolkit
  • Sample press release
  • Customizable flyer in Microsoft Word
  • Graphics to download, print or share on social media
