March came to an end with the celebration of National Boys & Girls Club Week, an exciting time at the Club! This is a special time when more than 4,300 organizations across the country showcase the amazing things that happen every day for more than 4 million young people.
 |
Monday
Clubs focused on our Academic Success goals, hosting math trivia games.
|
 |
Tuesday
Members did special activities around Character and Citizenship, with our Eureka Clubhouse kids bringing baked goods to the Eureka Housing Authority and Eureka Police Department's POP Unit. Our McKinleyville Teens did a beach clean-up at Clam Beach, while our Eureka Teens helped clean up their neighborhood around the Teen Center.

Wednesday
The mid-week focus was around Healthy Lifestyles. Members at each of our units did a healthy cooking challenge.

Thursday
Clubs recognized the Youth Development Professional staff that work each day to ensure a great experience for our Club members. The Cooking Club whipped up a great dinner for a staff appreciation night. We are very proud to be fully staffed at each of our locations with strong individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of youth.
Friday
Open the Door, Take the Tour was the theme for Friday, with many community members taking advantage of Club tours at each of our locations. This was a great opportunity to see what the Club is all about, from a member's prospective. Missed your chance at a tour? No problem! Give us a call, we're happy to have you come by and visit.
Saturday, April 1st
Don't miss our Community Celebration as we wrap up National Boys & Girls Club week at our Eureka Teen Center with lots of activities for children, music, food and a talent show! Free for all families, 3015 J Street from 12pm-4pm.

Members Celebrate Dr. Seuss
Members at the Eureka Clubhouse celebrated Dr. Seuss Day on March 2nd. Community volunteers and staff helped lead fun activities and games recognizing the great things Dr. Seuss has done to impact reading for children. As he said, "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book, and read to a child."

Clam Beach Clean Up
McKinleyville teens gave back to their community during National Boys & Girls Club Week with a beach clean up at Clam Beach. "It's important that everyone helps keep the beach clean, because we all live here," said one teen. This activity is just one way teens develop Character and Citizenship at The Club, by learning how they can make a difference in their community.

Teen Court Training
Teen Court held Training this month, with a full room of teens ready to learn more about the judicial process and start their volunteering with the Teen Court program. What happens when young people enter "the system?" What options exist once a teen has a record? These are just some of the things explored. Want to learn more about Teen Court? Anastasia Lucus, Clubhouse
Annie always has a positive attitude and is consistently found helping in the kitchen. When she grows up, she wants to become a teacher and share her love of reading. At the Club she enjoys playing baseball and participates in Power Hour, SMART Girls, Club Tech, and Sign Language. She says she comes to the Clubhouse because it is safe and fun after school.

With Women's History Month celebrated in March, what an ideal time to share our main program focused on empowering girls. SMART Girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls in three age groups, spanning ages 8 to 18. Through dynamic sessions, participatory activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls explore their own and societal attitudes and values as they build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
This month, the SMART Girls program in McKinleyville had a sleepover at the McKinleyville Teen & Community Center, a great time to strengthen friendships among girls. One parent said, "My daughter absolutely loves the girls program! It has been an incredible support tool in her transition from elementary to middle school."

Help Teen Court Achieve Their Goal!
The Humboldt County Teen Court program has been given a challenge by one of their supporters. Jon & Erin Flyer have challenged Teen Court to raise $8,000 for their spring art show. If the program can meet he goal, they will match it dollar for dollar!

Jane Doe in Wonderland
Jane Doe in Wonderland is a new play and survivor talk back created by Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre M.F.A. 2016 graduates Grace Booth, Erin Johnston and Kate Tobie in partnership with Humboldt County anti-sex trafficking organization Game Over.
Based on multiple survivor testimonials and Elle's educational training, the play seeks to draw parallels between Alice In Wonderland and how young men and women are lured into the world of sex trafficking-a world that exists right here in Humboldt County. The play addresses the question of "why don't they run?" by diving into the psychological and physical manipulation and abuse victims undergo at the hands of their traffickers. This survivor-led collaboration intends to bring community awareness to sex trafficking as a local issue, and not just an overseas phenomenon. It also addresses the stereotypes and misconceptions propagated by popular culture towards victims of the sex trade

The committee for the annual Cruz'n Eureka Car Show is looking for a few more volunteers to join the team. April is Month of the Military Child
Boys & Girls Clubs will join the military community in celebrating the Month of the Military Child in April. In 1986, former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger declared April as the month to honor the significant role children play in the Armed Services community. Throughout the month, Boys & Girls Clubs will participate in various forms of celebratory activities to recognize military service members and their children for their service to our country. In honor of military-connected youth, let's join them in celebrating Purple Up Day by wearing purple on Thursday, April 13!

We're so proud to be 1 of 6 organizations chosen by our local US Cellular team for their Volunteerism and Philanthropy program. Over the year, their employees help spread the message of the Boys & Girls Club mission, as well as volunteer their time in direct service with our youth. What a great asset in our community!

Thank you Soroptimist of Humboldt Bay for selecting Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods as one of the beneficiaries of High Heels for Healing. Funds from this event will support important Club programs specifically for girls and young women. Don't miss their annual event April 5th at 5:30pm at Eureka's Adorni Center.
