April, come she will. Which means Earth Day is just around the corner. I've already started my spring cleaning. Lots of old clothes to give away, hangers to return, and assorted chargers and e-waste to cast off. Time to clear out the cobwebs, throw the windows open wide, and let in the fresh air. Spring is here, the days are getting longer, and we'll soon be shedding those extra layers of clothes to give our bodies new sources of that elusive Vitamin D. Yes, Dr. Frankel, my self-proclaimed pasty dermatologist, I'll wear my hat and use SPF 30.
Something magical happens this time of year when people emerge from their hibernation. They take a fresh look at their surroundings. They notice what's changed. Lots of potholes out there. The streets are still dirty from the constant black ice and weeks of missed sweeping. The neighborhood could certainly use some spit and polish, and elbow grease. Keep in mind what Gandhi said about being the change you want to see in the world. Let's roll up our sleeves and get 'er done. Grab a broom. A can of paint. Plant some seeds and bulbs.
If your civic group or block doesn't organize a neighborhood cleaning day, then do it yourself. Pick a date, send an email to friends and neighbors, circulate a flyer, tell everyone you see. We can do this ~ no excuses!
Stay involved. Speak your truth. Be inspired. It's our community!

Open Nominations for Youth Awards
Do you know any exceptional young people doing extraordinary things in our community? We want to hear from you! Each year Brooklyn CB6 honors youth who have made a substantial contribution toward improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods through direct action or by serving as a positive role model for others.
We also recognize outstanding adults who work with youth on a voluntary basis, acting as a positive role model and keeping our youth engaged in constructive activities. Eligible adult candidates can be nominated for the Brooklyn CB6 Robert Acito Award for Youth Involvement, named after our former District Manager who served from 1980-1993.
Applications are available for our Youth Acknowledgement Award and Robert Acito Award for Youth Involvement. They can be picked up from the district office during regular business hours, or downloaded from the CB6 website. The Youth Acknowledgement and Robert Acito Awards will be presented at the beginning of the May general meeting.
Nominations extended to April 14, 2017.

Resilient Red Hook GO FUND ME Campaign
Resilient Red Hook needs to raise $4,000 to pay for a new website.
The group called Resilient Red Hook cares deeply for the Red Hook community, and advocates for climate change justice and a more resilient future for Red Hook. This group was previously called NY Rising and was founded August 2013, in response to superstorm Sandy, with NYS funding, as part of a state-wide initiative from the NYS Governor's Office of Storm Recovery. The goal was to create a resiliency plan for Red Hook with $3MM in NYS funding. That resiliency plan was completed in April 2014 and can be found at http://redhookcrp.wordpress.com. Our group continues to meet after creating that plan; and in early 2017, we renamed ourselves Resilient Red Hook.
The donations through this campaign are specifically going to fund the development of the website to be launched this spring. They received a grant through the Pratt Institute's Design Corps, where we are working with students to design a deeply informative website to help local Red Hook residents understand and building a resilient future in Red Hook.
The funds will go towards the programming end of the design. They will be launching their website in early June with the programming being completed in May.

Youth Internship & Opportunity Fair

Thursday, April 6th from 4:00-6:30pm
, the Red Hook Community Justice Center will be holding their annual Youth Internship & Opportunity Fair. Youth between the ages of 14-24 are welcomed to attend and speak to representatives of various employment and internship opportunities. Resources will also be available about Job readiness, skill building and enrichment programs for young adults. For more information, call 718-923-8260.

Red Hook Resilience Corps
The Red Hook Community Resilience Corps is currently accepting applications for half time and minimum time positions. The Red Hook Community Resilience Corps is an AmeriCorps National Service Program that seeks to make Red Hook a safer, stronger and more resiliency community. Corps members will dedicate most of their time to their education, they will work with a mentor from the Corps developing goals and working towards them, assisting full time and half time members in service projects throughout the Red Hook Community.
AmeriCorps Benefits
Half Time AmeriCorps members will receive a stipend of $3,759 (pre-tax) for the six to nine months that will be divided into bimonthly checks. In addition, they will receive an educational award of $2,887 which may be used toward higher education tuition.
Minimum Time members Corps members will receive an educational award of $1,221 which may be used toward higher education.
The deadline to apply is March 31st, 2017. Your application is not complete until a resume and letter of recommendation is submitted to [email protected]. Members will have to go through a one on one interview.

440 Gallery presents Tomas Rodriguez in a late-afternoon performance of solo guitar. Rodriguez has developed a unique repertoire that is rooted in the musical heart of the Latin world, specifically the folk and classical traditions of Spain and South America. His programs often draw upon the works of Venezuelan harp masters Juan Vicente Torrealba and Ignacio Figueredo, Malian virtuosos Toumani Diabaté and Ali Farka Touré, as well as contemporary flamenco. Tomas is a dedicated music educator and teaches basic guitar skills to young people, as well as having taught at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Suggested Donation $10.

Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance presents the 5th Annual Red Hook Prom - United in Love - Saturday, May 6 from 7pm-12am at South Brooklyn Community High School. The annual dance party and silent auction for adults benefits the pay-what-you-can programs at Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance. Cora will be honoring Councilman Carlos Menchaca from the 38th District as the 2017 Red Hook Prom King. Began in 2013 as a community wide spirit lifter following Hurricane Sandy, the Red Hook Prom has brought together more community members, fly moves, sassy outfits and - say it loud - LOVE - than any other Cora event over the past five years. Hosted in a high school gym, the 2017 Red Hook Prom draws inspiration from the greatest of decades (70s, 80s, and 90s) and is extended an hour longer to ensure ample hours for dancing.
