Prom King & Queen

Congratulations to JohnPaul Sakowski and Sydney Crawley!  They were selected by their peers as the 2017 Prom King and Queen. The Prom was a beautiful night on our campus for the students. Garces ASB Director, Caitlin Witwer, teamed up with Garces alumnus Andrew Haupt '16, and they turned the tennis courts into a red and white circus tent full of circus themed decorations, beautiful centerpieces, mood lighting, and they even covered the giant G on the hill with balloons!  It was a night to remember full of great memories for everyone in attendance.
Congratulations Molly Soper!

Congratulations to Garces junior Molly Soper on being selected to be a member of the 2017-2018 Ford Dream Builders!  Molly will be one of 32 high  achieving high school juniors who will be part of the Dream Builders youth leadership program during her senior year. As part of Dream Builders, she will continue the legacy of Jim Burke's generosity and civic spirit by developing and implementing a significant community service project with her Dream Builder team. We are very proud of Molly and know she will be a great representative of Garces.
Bakersfield Jockey Club

Congratulations to the Garces Rams who were honored for being Outstanding Student Athletes by the Bakersfield Jockey Club on Monday at a luncheon at Hodel's.  They are Joseph Tobias (baseball), Jamie Penner (softball), Lauren Burson (girls swimming), and Cael Osborn (boys swimming). Way to go Rams. We are so proud of you.
Congratulations Mariana & Andrew

Congratulations to Mariana Iturry and Andrew Orozco for being selected for the CSUB REVS-UP Program. This program is geared to increase interest in science and mathematics careers. REVS-UP offers hands-on research experiences for teams in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, and physics. It is a highly selective and competitive program.  This summer Mariana and Andrew will take part in research projects from June 5 through June 29, 2017 in the research laboratories at CSUB.

Way to go Mariana and Andrew! We are very proud of you.
Nice Work Ambroise, Mark, & Sammy!

On Saturday, Samual Chee, Ambroise Clarke-Curutchague, and Mark Pandol represented Garces at the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering Design Challenge held at Bakersfield College. The task was to design, develop, and present a wireless headphones geared to a specific consumer market. The boys came up with a very innovative design perfect for athletes and gave a great presentation. Way to go Rams!
Congratulations Jacen Roberson!

Garces junior, Jacen Roberson, is a stand out athlete on our campus and we aren't the only ones to notice.  Cal State Bakersfield offered Jacen a scholarship to play D1 baseball for them after he graduates and he made a verbal commitment to them this week.  We are so happy for him as his dream has been to play D1 baseball as a Runner in his hometown.  He will not be able to officially sign his letter of intent until next year, but it is wonderful to know as a junior that he already has a commitment from a D1 program to continue on playing a sport he loves.
Garces Play Day - Friday, April 21st

Special People Day
This year will mark the 23rd year of Garces Play Day where Garces students "buddy up" with special needs students from local elementary schools and spend the morning having fun on our campus.  Garces sets up game booths, pony rides, a petting zoo, a movie room, and a variety of outdoor sports activities all geared towards making our visitors feel like they are at a carnival.  It offers our students a morning to be compassionate and caring for others. It also offers them insight into how blessed they are to be able to do something kind for others. Often you will hear from students and alumni that it is one of their favorite days at Garces.
  • Students need to be here by 8:00 AM and will be dismissed at 12:30 PM.
  • Students should wear tennis shoes, bring sunglasses or a cap, and wear sun screen.
  • Students are encouraged to wear jeans or shorts and a Garces t-shirt.
  • The cafeteria will be closed but the Student Store will be open after school for snacks and drinks.
  • The front parking lot will be closed.  Please drop off/pick up your student off at the back parking lot.
First Lacrosse Win at Home!

Congratulations to the Club Bakersfield Rams Lacrosse team on their first win in Bakersfield! Goals were scored by Logan McMurtrey, Cameron Garcia, and Corbin McMurtrey.  Coach, Andrew Zaninovich, awarded the game ball to Jack "Wags" Waguespack for his great defensive play as goalie. The win on Saturday made history in our town and it is exciting to see so many Garces students be a part of it. There is one last club team home game.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 7th at 1:00 PM.  The Club Rams will play on the lower field.

Ms. Clarke's Class of 2018
Poetry Superstars

Below are some poems written by the Class of 2018 during their sophomore year. Ms. Clarke wanted to share them with our families.  Through the rest of the school year  we will publish her favorite poems from last year.

Ode to the Sun
By: Emily Demler

The sun is like a big yellow light bulb,
Shining brightly in the sky.
So radiant so bright, you bring us daylight.
You awake the daytime sleep,
From which we arise, when you set.
It's like the whole world is silent, just for the moment.
With your rays, like a kiss upon our cheeks,
Suddenly warms our hearts like a gift every day.
The warm glow you give off,
Caresses our bodies like a blanket.
But be careful, staying out too long,
May cause you to look like a tomato!

Ten Little Lines
By: Danielle Munoz

Her hair was long as the waterfall.
When she pulled it back it was thick as a
water coat.
It smelled like the ocean breeze.
It looked as smooth as silk.
The long locks of her hair felt the way you
hear waves crashing into the rocks.
Her hair looked like Rapunzel's as she walked
through Corona with flowers in her hair.
Her hair was so long it couldn't help but get tangled up.
The darkness of the moon lit the night sky.
She used her hair to guide her back home.
Her hair comforted her when she was walking
in the darkness.
The beauty of her wet hair smelled of the ocean.

Ode to Sleep
By: Erin Garcia

I feel gravity tug at my body
As I sink into my bed.
My pillow is the tour guide
As I venture off into my dreams.
I see things out of this world.
In the morning, I will wake
To the smell of the morning dew,
The sound of birds chirping,
The taste of coffee upon my tongue.
Without sleep,
We could not appreciate the day to come.

Summer Afternoon
By: Oliver Oxley

The sun is brighter than a forest fire.
It climbs to the top of the sky and burns the earth.
The air is warm and the stale like a dirty attic,
The dried grass turns to crumbs as I grab it.
The mirage on the sidewalk looks as if it is a puddle.
The summer adventure taste refreshing.
The sound of lawnmowers never ends.
Jumping into the lake feels like a breath of fresh air.
Summer peaches sweeter than Willy Wonka's' candy,
The sun was cool,
The repetition of sprinklers ticking of endless summer days,
Uncle Sam riding fireworks to the stars,
The heat wave patrols the streets and the cool shadows run,
Even the orange sun takes a rest as it falls through the earth.

Ode to My Basketball
By: Hannah Simpson

Dribble and drop, what a ball hop
For you are so round, you make my heart proud.
You are so unique; you keep my body on fleet.
No one else comes before you.
Go here and there without a care.
I wish I could be more like you.
The season's almost here, so let's play!
My dear, your dribble is heaven,
And I am your angel,
Your net is gold, and I am the complete mold.

Ekib
By: Antonio Moreno

Bike, oh bike, you go so fast- like a train.
You get me so many places.
Bike, oh bike, you make me feel so important
When I ride. It's a feeling I never get.
Your amazing blue shocks look like the great blue sky,
How I adore your amazing color reminding me of a fire truck,
Your smooth decals are to die for,
The swishing sound the wind makes when I ride sounds like a deflating balloon.
I enjoy taking the dirt off-it's amazing to look at you clean!
My great red bike looks like Clifford the Big Red Dog.
I have great affection for what you do.
You always leave people with their jaw dropped,
So now you know how I adore you, my friend,
For you are my all. I will always, always ride and cherish you for you take me places.

Message from
Brian Cobb
Director of Campus Ministry

Dear Parents,

Before completing our last day of class and heading into our Easter break, the campus ministry department wanted to make sure to extend the warmest wishes to every member of the Garces community as we celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our Lenten Season has been a season of J.O.Y. Jesus first, others second and ourselves third. In order to carry this theme throughout the remainder of the school year, along with the guidance of the Parents Club, we will be making and donating lunches to St. Vincent de Paul on Fridays throughout April and May. In addition, April 21st will be our 24th installment of the Garces Play Day. Special needs students, ranging in ages from preschool to third grade will travel to Garces from their schools spread throughout Bakersfield. Our students will buddy up with each of these students and help them navigate each of the amazing activities we have set up. This is a huge undertaking and a very special day for every one involved. It is imperative for the success of the day, that all Garces students attend. Our students will have a training session with members of the Superintendent of Schools on Wednesday the 19th to help facilitate a fantastic day. Included in the days events are a petting zoo, soccer, football, frisbee, arts and crafts, a movie, and plenty of other games and activities.
