TABC Hosts
Envision Shakespeare Competition
A magical storm threatens a ship full of royal passengers and chaos ensues.  It's an exciting way to hook an audience, and participants in the third annual Envision Shakespeare competition, hosted this year by TABC, were tasked with interpreting the first scene of The Tempest, which begins exactly that way.  Envision Shakespeare is a yeshiva-league competition created and chaired by Rebecca Lopkin who directs the theater program at multiple schools including TABC, and Nancy Edelman, TABC curriculum director and veteran member of the English department.  Students are invited to present their own creative interpretation of the same scene from a Shakespeare play, using no costumes or props other than folding chairs.  Teams of students from TABC, Frisch, Ma'ayanot, Westchester Hebrew High School and SAR spent the day performing their scenes but also participating in enriching theater workshops led by the professional teaching artists who served as judges.  Students also heard from Peter Avery, the director of theater programs for the NYC Board of Education and a member of the Highland Park orthodox community, who spoke about the importance of the arts and arts education and gave the students helpful advice and feedback about their performances.

The TABC team, coached by English department chair Dr. Carol Master, was awarded the trophy for most creative interpretation of a scene, and Aharon Nissel was awarded a best actor trophy for his portrayal of Prospero, the exiled Duke and sorcerer who creates the magical storm and who isn't even written into the scene--the TABC team ingeniously put him in the background, using his magic to exact his revenge on those who had usurped his throne. Thank you to each member of the  Shakespeare Envision team,  director Eli Dickman and actors Shai Gutfreund, Binyamin Novetsky, Yehoshua Kanarek, Netzach Schuman, Aviad Shely, Yitzchak Tollinsky, Moshe Dergel, Yaakov Kagel, Aharon Nissel and Yaakov Miller, who performed so precisely and intelligently. As our two awards illustrate, the performances showed personal excellence as well as team effort.

Ezra Hermann of SAR also won a trophy for best actor. P'nina Krischer of Ma'ayanot won the award for best director for directing her ensemble's creation of the sound of the storm using a capella voices.  Westchester Hebrew High School won the overall competition, using voices as well as hands to create the sounds of the storm.

It was a day of experiential learning and exposure to the arts that prompted one student to comment, "I wish school was like this every day."
Joel Haims Shares his Work With
the AP Government Class
Where does freedom of religion end in the United States?  Does religious freedom trump everything?  These were some of the questions posed during class by the AP U.S. Government and Politics class regarding civil liberties.  Mr.  Joel Haims, an attorney at Morrison and Forster and the father of Alex '15, visited with the class to discuss his involvement in a number of religious rights and freedom cases including Holt v. Hobbs and Rothman v. USTA.  His description of these cases and explanation of his role gave the students a new understanding of religion-based cases and how they are handled in the courts.
Rav Michael Rosensweig
Gives Shiur to Y18
The talmidim of  Rabbi Fridman's Y18 shiur celebrated a remarkable achievement this week, as, over the course of the year, they learned the entirety of Rambam Hilkhot Chametz U'Matzah. To mark their siyyum, Rabbi Michael Rosensweig, Rosh Yeshiva and Rosh Kollel at Yeshivat Rabbeinu Yitzchak Elchanan, and  a world expert in the study of Rambam, came to learn with them about the interaction between Korban Pesach and Korban Chagigah.
10G Chemistry Test
Electrical Conductivity
The 10G chemistry students had a great time testing the electrical conductivity of various solutions to determine the chemical composition of unknown materials. They particularly enjoyed making interdisciplinary connections between topics in physics and chemistry, recognizing the unified language of nature (i.e., science).

AP Art History Spends Stellar Day
with Starry Night at MOMA
Mrs. Edelman and her AP Art History class got ready for the AP exam at the Museum of Modern Art, accompanied by Mrs. Leah Moskovits. A highlight of the trip was experiencing the beauty and genius of Van Gogh's "The Starry Night" and seeing so many works by other great artists of the late 19th, 20th, and early 21st centuries. JV Soccer Beats Frisch
Starting the season off with low expectations, the TABC varsity soccer team quickly became a threat to every other team in the league. Winning game after game, the boys in yellow started to shock their opponents by pulling through in their first five games of the season. With two of those games resulting in a well fought battle and the other three being blowouts, TABC advanced to five and zero approaching what starts to look like our biggest game yet.

Wednesday, April 4, was the date of our annual Frisch - TABC, home game. Coming into the game knowing this one won't be an easy one, the boys in yellow kept their heads held high. TABC captain Refi Minsky found the top right corner of the net all the way from the far left side to put TABC up 1-0 quickly in the first quarter. With a quiet stretch the score remained the same. Towards the end of the quarter Frisch knew they had to do something, scoring three goals in the last couple minutes of the quarter we went into the locker room down 3-1.
With TABC coming out of the locker room frustrated, the Frisch Cougars netted two more goals right away to make the score 5-1. With the look of losing closer than we thought a clutch red card was given to the Cougars captain. This meant TABC had a one man advantage for the next five minutes. This was our chance. Dov Baron and Refi Minsky the dynamic offensive pair, along with Ezra Friedman and Aviel Avidan two of the most technical players in the league, and Avi "the wall" Bodoff,  were all ready to make the most of this advantage. We  came out on fire. Scoring five goals in five minutes, TABC was looking at one of the greatest comebacks in history. Although the TABC advantage came to an end, the scoring for them did not. With two more goals in the second quarter, TABC ended the half with an incredible six goal run. The score was now 7-5 in favor of TABC. Heading into the locker room, the Storm were more pumped up than ever, and ready to seal this game away.

The third quarter started and still the scoring did not stop for TABC. With three more goals in the third quarter, TABC started playing their best game yet. They were now riding on nine unanswered goals and took the 10-5 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Storm knew that they needed just two more goals to seal this win, pull off one of the greatest comebacks in history, and get the mercy over Frisch. With a more than excited bench getting the players on the court hyped up, the boys in the yellow put in two more goals to seal this game and earn the mercy.
With outstanding goaltending in the second half to keep the Storm going, starting keeper Yisroel Tannenbaum proved himself with a second half shutout. Dov Baron, with one of his most successful appearances yet, finished the game with four goals. Captain Aviel Avidan, while playing rock solid defense as well as offense, finished the game with one goal. Captain Avi Bodoff doing what he does best (getting the ball out of the zone as well as blocking tons of shots) netted one and finished the game with a goal. Ezra Friedman, who did his thing, faking out probably every player on the court and  keeping the Frisch offense away from our goalie - in addition to setting up multiple plays - had an outstanding game. Captain Refi Minsky, who finished the game with five goals and four assists, celebrated his fourth goal with a backflip that wowed the crowd. With appearances from Efraim Tiger, Ami Gerszberg, Josh Leimen, and Gavi Book who also helped seal this victory, the win belongs to the whole team. TABC Storm advances to 6 and 0, and clinches a playoff spot. The Storm look forward to staying undefeated, and bringing home a championship trophy at the end of the season.
Hydrolysis of Water as
an Alternate Energy Source
Recently our chemistry students studied the hydrolysis of water producing hydrogen as a potential energy source. Students studied the production of hydrogen gas as a function of applying varying amounts of voltage through water in a Hoffman apparatus. In order to make the water conduct it was spiked with varying concentrations of sulfuric acid. As expected the rate of hydrogen production increased with increasing voltage as well as increasing acid concentration. The search for efficient hydrogen production is an open area of clean energy research.

TABC Travels to South Jersey to Accomplish Acts of Chessed
A group of TABC talmidim traveled to South Jersey for a chesed trip. On Sunday , they worked with the SBP, an organization that  shrinks the time between disaster and recovery from natural disasters.  They rebuilt a  home that was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.  On Monday , they went to Lev Bikur Cholim in Lakewood, where they were able to h elp the group organize   their Pesach preparations  for hosting families with  someone in the hospital. From there it was on  to the Center in Lakewood, where the Talmidim  did an art project, and danced, with children  with special needs. The trip concluded at the  Kessler Rehabilitation Center in West Orange, where they sang for  the residents and uplifted their spirits. For more pictures, click here.

Teachers and Students
As Engaged Learners
Our faculty embarked on their first series of PLCs (professional learning communities), tackling issues such as differentiated instruction, understanding and improving assessments, and technology integration. While that was going on, our talmidim were privileged to hear a shiur klali from either Rabbi Adler or Rabbi Yablok. The former discussed the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim in Tanach and the haggadah, while the latter examined the parameters of chatzi shiur.

Lines in the Library
TABC's budding poets expressed their inner muses as they recited poetry during Lines in the Library. The event was emceed by Shai Gutfreund and the boys who presented were Eli Dickman, Ephraim Helfgot, Shai Gutfreund, Moshe Gutfreund, Ori Siegel and Naftali Shavelson. Faculty members Mr. Strassman, Mrs. Edelman and Mrs. Miller joined in the experience. The boys were quite excited to have the opportunity to share their poems with friends and faculty.
