Photojournalism Class Tackles the Heroin Epidemic
This semester, Milford High School photojournalism students in Janelle Schunk's class have been tackling a tough issue. The class has been focusing their lenses on the faces of the heroin epidemic.
Students have been interviewing recovering addicts, medical and mental health professionals, reporters, law enforcement, and families who have been impacted by addiction. The students have been creating photographic portraits of those they interview, along with written commentary that explains each perspective and what they have learned through the interview.

"The project goal is to portray that the current heroin epidemic impacts an entire community, not only those directly touched by opiate addiction. Students will learn more about this issue through many perspectives as they also discover both the problems and potential solutions," Mrs. Schunk said.

A panel of students involved in the project presented the lessons they have learned at the Community United meeting on Tuesday, April 4. This group has been meeting for the past three years to address the opiate issue in Clermont County.

"I have learned that everyone has a story to tell and the heroin epidemic not only effects the user, but it impacts the entire family and community," said Gwene Kline, photojournalism student.

As a final demonstration of learning, the class is hosting a public exhibition to share with the community. The students' work will be showcased in an exhibition entitled, No Boundaries, on May 8, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Miami Township Civic Center, 6101 Meijer Drive, in Milford.

Milford Teacher Wins $10K on  Wheel of Fortune
On March 8, Milford teacher Matt Gillispie was a contestant on the Wheel of Fortune. Mr. Gillispie, an Ninth Grade Community English teacher, won $10,000!  He shared that playing on Wheel of Fortune was an amazing experience.

" One of the greatest parts of this experience was to come back and tell my students about it. I had previously told them I had auditioned, but I did not tell them I filmed the show until about a week before it aired," Mr. Gillispie said. "I am a firm believer that anything is possible as long as you try, and to share this achievement with my students has been neat.  Hopefully, this will encourage others to go after any dream they may have."

English Students Take on Shakespeare
This school year, the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (CSC) has partnered with 38 different area schools, giving each school one of the 38 plays in Shakespeare's canon. Through this collaboration,
Milford High School will perform "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on  Friday, April 21, at 9:30 a.m. in Memorial Hall on Elm Street.

During this school year, 18 actors from the CSC ensemble went into area highs schools as teaching artists. Each actor is paired with one or two schools and will work with teachers and students to develop and co-create interpretations of one play from Shakespeare's  38  plays.

Milford High School English teacher, Kirstie ( Rheinheimer ) Ford, and Drama teacher, Sherry McCamley, coordinate the program. Students in Acting III and Mrs. Ford's first semester Shakespeare class are participating. Two actors from the CSC, Billy Chace and Patrick Phillips, have also volunteered their time to work with the students.

Over the course of the year, Milford students have read the play together, identified key scenes, worked with the language to cut down the script, have auditioned for parts, and are rehearsing for their public performance.

"Billy and Patrick have graced us with their time and presence in working with our students and have provided incredible strategies for how to take on Shakespeare," said Mrs. Ford. "They have shared their enthusiasm and love for Shakespeare with our students and made this such a rewarding experience."
Milford Students Mastering the ACT
The ACT is one key piece of the college application process and Milford students have the opportunity to prepare through an elective called "Mastering the ACT" taught by Mr. Geoff Wahl.
The  semester-long class meets on Mondays,  Wednesdays and Fridays.

Students learn test-taking techniques, take a practice ACT and enter the scores into the TCA prep online program. Students spend time during the class using the TCA prep site to prepare for the ACT test based on their practice test results.

"I have numerous students in my Mastering the ACT class who have raised their score(s) by multiple numbers," said Mr. Wahl.
