If you are planning to transfer to a UC or CSU, you must have 60 transferable units. (Note: out-of-state and privates do not have this requirement).

The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a pattern of courses that California community college students can follow to satisfy lower-division general education requirements for any UC or CSU campus.

Although completion of General Education (GE) is not normally an admission requirement for transfer, there are some campuses that do require completion or weigh completion of general education heavily in the transfer selection process. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you complete General Education before transfer (note: science and engineering majors should focus on finishing the preparation for their major and consult with a counselor regarding GE).

Although it may seem like "too much information", once we break it down, you will see it is pretty easy to follow.
This is one of the most important transfer resources to use:
Key points to keep in mind:
  • All courses on IGETC are UC and CSU transferable.
  • Satisfying all areas will result in completing 11-13 courses.
  • Courses on IGETC are academic rather than applied or technical
  • Many private and out-of-state schools accept IGETC. (Consult with a Transfer Center advisor or counselor for more information)
  • Completing GE courses is recommended when undecided about a major.
  • No grade lower than a "C" may be used on IGETC. ("C-" can only be used in Area 6A)
  • Engineering, computer science and other science related majors should focus on completing the preparation for their major (see www.assist.org). Completing IGETC may or may not be appropriate but the 7-course pattern is a minimum UC requirement. Consult with a counselor.
  • Cannot double count a course in 2 areas (e.g. History can count in Area 3B or 4, not both).
  • Courses in your major preparation may also meet an IGETC requirement.
  • You may also complete the SBCC GE for the Associate degree with careful selection on IGETC.
  • For certification, IGETC requirements must be completed before transfer. Partial certification may be given if all but 1 or 2 requirements have been completed.
  • No coursework completed outside of the United States can be used on IGETC, except to satisfy foreign language proficiency.
  • Qualifying AP (Advanced Placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate) scores may be used to satisfy some IGETC requirements.
  • IGETC must be certified by the last community college attended once you have submitted your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to your four-year institution. It is the student's responsibility to apply for certification through the Transfer Center.
For more information regarding IGETC and specific considerations and exceptions, check out the University of California website.
IGETC and www.assist.org are two valuable resources in selecting courses to prepare you for transfer to a UC or CSU.
