Commentaries
State & National Reports
Michigan in Context

State of Michigan - Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives (March 2017)
According to the state's best projections of the job market through 2024, of the five occupational groups with the highest growth rate, only one group of jobs doesn't overwhelmingly require at least a bachelor's degree. Ninety plus percent of Computer & Mathematical, Architecture & Engineering, and Business & Financial Operations jobs will require at least a bachelor's degree, 79 percent of Healthcare Practitioners & Technical jobs will require a bachelor's degree, and Healthcare Support jobs will primarily not.

University of Pennsylvania Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy (March 2017)
Michigan is one of the national leaders in the college promise program movement, with over ten such programs in the state. Only California and Illinois join Michigan in this feat.

National Student Clearinghouse Research Center (March 2017)
52 percent of 2015-16 bachelor's degree earners in Michigan, including both public and independent institutions, had previously enrolled at a public community college sometime in the prior ten years.

Education Commission of the States (April 2017)
In the conversation around FAFSA simplification, the ECS points out that there would be strong secondary effects in the states because of state alignment with the FAFSA. Of the five major sections of the FAFSA, Michigan's state financial aid process relies on four of them. All but six states rely on two or more elements of the FAFSA.
Events

AN ACADEMIC-INDUSTRY WORKSHOP, May 17-18 in Lansing, Michigan
Sponsored by Michigan State University, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NSF International, and Northwestern University. There is no fee to attend. Pre-registration is required.

Responding to growing pressure from investors, customers, community, and efficiency demands, companies in sectors from manufacturing to agriculture are incorporating "sustainability" into strategic planning and operations. Standards are critical in framing sustainability solutions, guiding related benchmarking and measuring and communicating performance. This workshop will stimulate increased attention to technical standards in both teaching and industry. How can standards be effectively incorporated? How can academia, industry and the standards community work together to enhance sustainability and training of future professionals?
