The Dyersburg/Dyer County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the 2017 Business Expo is on Thursday, May 4^th, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lannom Center!  The Business Expo is open to the public with FREE ADMISSION and there will be door prizes, food, fun, networking and CASH PRIZES! The Business Expo is the best way to showcase your business/organization to the community!

On Monday, April 5, State Representative Bill Sanderson and Senator Ed Jackson participated in a Legislative Coffee at the Lannom Center. Sanderson and Jackson updated Dyer County citizens on the latest news from Nashville regarding infrastructure and cutting taxes on food and manufacturing. Governor Haslam's Improve Act will cut taxes on groceries to 4.5%. The Act will also has plans to provide safer, more efficient ways of commuting while keeping it's roads debt free. 

Overall, the Act is expected to bring $278 million to the state for projects. The impact of the Improve Act to the average Tennessee motorist will be $4 per month. These funds will come in addition to $18 million in funding that will be used on road repairs which has been made available due to changes in the state's open container law. 

Another key issue addressed in Haslam's 2017-18 budget proposal was the implementation of Tennessee Reconnect, which will allow current high school graduates and returning adults with an opportunity to attend a 2-year community college free of tuition. An expansion of Haslam's Drive to 55 goal Tennessee Reconnect aims to attract 900,000 Tennesseans who have earned some college credit but have yet to earn a degree.

Haslam is also promoting the Strong Act, which would provide enlisted veterans with opportunity to receive their bachelor's degree while in service, providing Tennessee's National Guard a competitive edge in recruiting.

In a continued effort to enhance K-12th education, Haslam also plans to provide $200 million in funding to the state's Basic Education Program (BEP), including $100 million to improve teacher salaries and $22 million to help schools serve high-need students, and $15 million for career and technical education equipment.

Jackson stated that since 2011 there has been a total increase in K-12 spending of more than $1.3 billion, including $430 million for increases to teacher salaries.

Other items legislators will be looking at closely in next year's budget include:

* Physical and mental health

* Infrastructure

* Corrections

* Justice Reform

* Juvenile Justice Reform

* $9.5 million combined to expand substance abuse and crisis intervention treatment services and supports.

* $21 million to fund recommendations from the Rural Task Force

On Thursday, March 23, Dave Brown and Ron Childers stopped by the Lannom Center to greet fans and prepare Dyer County for severe weather! 

Facade Grant Update

The Main Street Façade Improvement Grant (FIG) applied for by the City of Dyersburg and administered by Main Street Dyersburg is designed to put grant money into revitalization downtown.  $100,000 will be used for façade improvements like paint, awnings, and windows.  Each applicant must be in the Historic District and may apply for up to $20,000 in grant funding with a 25-percent match.  Recently, 19 applications were reviewed and are most are being considered for funding.  The Selection Committee, made up of Main Street Directors and City Officials, will hold a final review later this week and announcements for grant winners will follow State review.  "The long awaited Façade Improvement Grants come at an excellent time in the preservation of our historic downtown," said Steve Guttery, Director of Downtown Development.  "We have been very successful with enhancement grants for infrastructure but this is the first time Main Street has been able to facilitate a grant that would work on private property," Guttery says.  The City of Dyersburg has been instrumental in this grant program providing the initial funding that will be used to pay for grant work.  Each property owner will basically get up to $25,000 in improvements for matching funds of only $5,000.

The Main Street Dyersburg Farmers Market will see some changes this season.  Steve Guttery, Director of Downtown Development said:  "While our market became famous across the state for opening at 5:00 a.m., the request for fresh fruits and vegetables at mid-morning prompted us to go to more normal open hours for our 12 ^th season."  With producers coming regularly from Covington, Trenton, Ripley and beyond, arriving before 5:00 a.m. makes for a long day in the heat at the market.  "We will set up at 7:00 a.m. and sell from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  This allows our growers to arrive at the market in daylight and have a better selection at 8:00 a.m.  We base the new hours on a decade of watching the slow change in the traffic pattern.  Our efforts to provide a farmers market have been centered around bringing people back downtown," Guttery said.  The Main Street Dyersburg Farmers Market is a producer-only market and a member of the Tennessee Association of Farmers Markets and Pick Tennessee Products.  Follow us on Facebook at Main Street Dyersburg Farmers Market.  The market is located at 335 Clark Avenue South one block south of Cedar Street.  For more information contact Steve Guttery at 731-285-3433.  

Mayor Young's Easter Egg Hunt is April 15th

The annual Main Street Easter Egg Hunt at the Courthouse is now called Mayor Young's Easter Egg Hunt.  Mayor Young and former Mayor Hill have been instrumental in collecting prizes and making the egg hunt a downtown event.  Held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday before Easter, the event includes prizes for children and 4,000 candy filled Easter Eggs.  Age groups are  0-2 years, 2-4 years, 4-6 years, and 6-8 years.  Dyer County Adult Leadership will hide the eggs starting at 12:00 Noon and the hunt is on starting with the striking of the bell in the Courthouse dome.
