Public Forum on Older Adults & Behavioral Health Needs

The California Mental Health Planning Council is hosting a public forum on older adults and behavioral health needs of the aging population during its April meeting in San Jose. The Planning Council is trying to get the word out to have a robust discussion about the needs and available services for this population.

With NAMI CA's members spread across most of California's diverse counties, it was important for our agency to prioritize legislative issues in a meaningful way. This year we used a new strategy for incorporating member input into this year's legislative priorities. We surveyed members via electronic communication (e-mail) utilizing a Survey Monkey survey requesting members to prioritize topics among those listed within the NAMI California Public Policy Platform.  For more information and to view the top 10 advocacy subjects members mentioned click  here .

Children's Mental Health Spring Advocacy Day


NAMI California in partnership with the California Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (CAL-ACAP) and United Advocates for Children and Families (UACF) will be hosting the May 1st event in Sacramento. This will be the 10th annual collaboration event among partners. We will be meeting at the Capitol to conduct legislative visits. 
 
We hope you can join us for an impactful day of advocacy for children's mental health at the state capitol. This is a chance to join other enthusiastic people to discuss important issues with policy makers and their staff.
 
You will get the opportunity to combine your voice with additional voices of people from partnering organizations to support common legislative goals.

May is Mental Health Month  is coming up soon, and NAMI CA has the following opportunities and resources for Affiliates. We hope each Affiliate will find their own unique way to support May is Mental Health Month, and bring awareness to their communities about this important topic!
  • Mini-Grants Available for Each Mind Matters & May is Mental Health Month Activities - Applications due April 12thNAMI CA is offering affiliates the opportunity to coordinate an Each Mind Matters activity in honor of May is Mental Health Month! The selected affiliates receive a $1,000 stipend to host an activity that supports the EMM message and spreads awareness of the EMM movement. For more information, please Click Here.
  • For NAMI on Campus High School (NCHS) and NAMI on Campus (NOC) College Clubs- Mini-Grants Available for Each Mind Matters & May is Mental Health Month Activities - Applications due April 12thFor Clubs, NAMI CA is offering mini-grants in the amount of $500 for clubs that are interested in hosting an awareness event on their campus or in their communities. NAMI Signature Program Operating Policies

The NAMI Signature Program Operating Policies have been developed to ensure the ongoing provision of consistent and quality programming at all levels of NAMI.
 
NAMI State Organizations (NSO) and NAMI Affiliates (NA), their board education committees
and staff may not set policies at variance with the NAMI signature program policies stated in the document. These policies are also to be followed by NAMI program leaders (i.e., teachers,  mentors, presenters, facilitators) and trainers.
 
The operating policies covering information regarding: stipends, training formats, confidentiality, presentation formats, qualifications for program leaders, and much more. Any operational issues not covered below should  be addressed by the NSO in accordance with all applicable laws in their respective state.

Family/Peer Support Specialist Webinar Training Program

The Family/Peer Support Specialist Webinar Training Program is devoted to giving peers and family members an opportunity to learn about educational skills such as the Recovery Model, Communication Skills, Trauma Informed Care, among others. All webinar training sessions are guided by trained presenters and provide opportunities for live participant interaction.  The goal of this program is to provide individuals with lived experience as a peer or family member Behavioral Health educational training, one-on-one career counseling, and support to volunteer or work in the Behavioral Health Field.  Interested in taking part in this program?

To take part in the program, a person can fit one of the following criteria (or both):
  • Individuals with Lived Experience
  • Family Member and/or Loved One

Thursday, April 6, 2017 6:00PM-8:30PM (UPDATED) 
 
Location:  Webinar Training (computer based)
 
Time Commitment, Expectations & Support for Participants
  • Participants will need to attend 2 weekly webinar sessions (Monday and Wednesday) that are each 2.5 hours long.
  • Training program consists of 70 hours training that include 19 webinar sessions and assignments.
  • Send completed Interest Form to Community Engagement Coordinator, Zuleima Flores.
  • A designated Program Coordinator will offer support to participants.
  • Career counseling and support will be provided.

Coming Soon: NAMI on Campus High School Online Format!


NAMI on Campus High School (NCHS) clubs are student-led clubs that raise mental health awareness and reduce stigma on high school campuses through peer led activities and education.
 
NAMI CA is excited to announce that NCHS will be going through a makeover to offer an easier, streamlined online start up process. The target date of this process is August 2017. NAMI CA will keep affiliates posted of the new format once more details are available and plan to offer webinars and technical assistance on the online process this summer.

Please note that the April 20th Program Directors' webinar  has been cancelled . The next scheduled webinar is the new Program Directors' orientation webinar on May 18th at 11:30am PT.  NAMI thanks you for all your hard work and leadership.



NAMI is thrilled that 61 people were able to join them for their recent NAMI Family-to-Family webinar! On the webinar, NAMI shared announcements from NAMI and had guest speaker Michelle Ready (a teacher, trainer and national trainer for F2F from South Carolina) offer tips for teaching Class 5 Problem Solving. NAMI would like to thank you for joining them on their NAMI Basics Technical Assistance webinar on 3/15. NAMI discussed the update of Bases y Fundamentos de NAMI, research and evidence-based practice status for NAMI Basics, and NAMI Basics online. NAMI also talked about how the national management of NAMI Basics is transitioning from Teri Brister to Jennifer Rothman ( jrothman@nami.org ).
