March Students of the Month
Rachel Wang- 2017

Senior Rachel Wang serves as secretary for both Spanish Honor Society and National English Honor Society.  She is also involved in Habitat for Humanity, National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Creative Writing Club, and the Northern Lights Literary Magazine.  Rachel is heavily involved in the music department as a string ensemble member and pit orchestra member for the past three years.  This is where some of her favorite memories at North were created.  The little day-to-day moments in orchestra class, playing alongside all of the ensembles during the finale piece of the Prism concert, and playing the violin solo for “Tango de Amor” in the Addams Family Musical.  Rachel’s favorite class at North was AP Language and Composition with Ms. Carr.  The class helped her understand the impact of words — that language is a choice and either each word she chooses can add to her credibility as a writer, or detract from it.  Outside of school, Rachel is involved in her church’s youth group as a caretaker and worship team leader.  She has participated in the Saturday Strings ensembles in Flemington for four years, serving as concertmaster of the advanced and chamber ensembles.  Rachel plays in the Hunterdon Symphony as first violinist and volunteers as a studio assistant at the Hunterdon Art Museum.  Next year, Rachel plans to major in English or Journalism at Washington and Lee University or the College of William and Mary.
Issam Mardini - 2017

Sam Mardini has had four memorable years at North Hunterdon.  His favorite classes at North have been AP Biology, BC Calculus, and AP Literature.  AP Biology was a great experience because he was fascinated by the depth of information covered about our natural world and the fun classroom environment created by Mrs. Flynn.  He enjoyed BC Calculus because of engaging challenges it presents and its direct applicability to real problems or project in the world.  AP Literature is another favorite because its discussion based class work and its ability to make him think creatively.  Some of Sam’s favorite memories have come from his time on the track team and their meets.  The throwing team is incredibly close knit and together they helped each other work their hardest and reach their highest potential.  Another favorite memory was the final project in AP Biology where he studied the effect of various chemicals on the nervous system of ants.  Sam has participated in Track and Field, where he throws the Javelin, for all four years and Varsity for three years.  He has also attended Winter Weight room for the past three years.  Sam works at Oak Grove Plantation and Topline Farm, a horse barn.  He will be studying either Engineering or Finance at either Rutgers, Virginia Tech, TCNJ, Northeastern, Rowan, NJIT, Susquehanna, or RIT.

March Athletes of the Month
Kelley McCarten - 2017

Track and Field and Cross Country athlete, Kelley McCarten has been running since the second grade.  Kelley believes her strongest skills are her leadership to her teammates and her experience since she has been running for a long time.  In Cross Country, she was a part of the Varsity Seven when they won the Northeast Regional Championships.  She was also able to travel to Oregon for Nike Nationals, which was an amazing experience and something she will never forget.  Recently, Kelley was a part of the Distance Medley Relay team where she ran the 800 leg.  The relay won the Eastern States Meet in NYC and placed seventh at New Balance Nationals.  She also runs the 1600 in track and individually qualified for the Meet of Champions in winter track in the 1600.  Her time for the 800 is 2:21 and 5:10 for the 1600.  Kelley is also a member of National Honor Society and is Treasurer of the Spanish Honor Society.  She will be running Cross Country and Track for Elon University where she will study Health Science on a Pre-Med track.

Karl Sethna - 2017

Senior Karl Sethna has been playing Lacrosse since he was in the sixth grade.  Lacrosse is a sport he has always loved playing.  Karl got involved with lacrosse when he was younger because he enjoyed playing football and did not have a contact sport to play in the spring.  He is also a member of Interact Club and on the varsity basketball team.  Karl plays point guard on the team and has played the sport since he was in first grade.  His favorite memory from playing lacrosse at North was winning the Hunterdon/Warren/ Sussex Championship when he was a freshman.  Karl is a three-year starter and saw playing time at the varsity level as a freshman.  He has helped to anchor a defense that has set school records each of the past three seasons for the fewest goals allowed in school history.  Karl considers his strongest skills his athleticism and motivation.  He loves to run fast and try his best.  The team looks forward to competing in the state and county tournaments this spring.  We are excited to have Karl as a senior leader, and expect big things from him in the future when he leaves North Hunterdon.  Next year, Karl plans to participate in club lacrosse.  He is deciding between attending Maryland, Northeastern, and Pittsburgh.

Art Student Showcase
Skyler Hamilton '17

Most of my work is conceptual. I base my works off personal experiences, thoughts, abstract ideas and the world and issues around me. I started out in drawing. I still love to draw, but there are unwritten rules with drawing. I don't get the satisfaction I do with it as I do forming 3-D figures and forms with my hands and building my ideas up. I make these ideas feel more real than I ever could with any other art medium. I've been working in Ceramics for over three years now and I'm still discovering myself as an ceramicist. I've based a few pieces on my favorite experiences with my grandfather who passed away two years ago. Other works I've based off who I am and who I am becoming. Certain other ideas - like my Raku sculpture of the Saturn Man (top left) - just sort of formed and became the way they were before my very eyes. It was almost as if the creative energy took over me. That Raku project I sculpted in less than a day and I still don't know what exactly inspired it. My abstract woman (bottom left), is based on how you can't portray a naked body without completely abstracting and censoring the parts it has, making them shapes so people can "appreciate the cubist style" rather than the body.

My Triptych (top right)  is a story of my grandfather and me. It shows how we were before he passed away. I was happy and we were both full of life. The dark panel on the end shows how I was after he passed away. Clouded and rid with grief. There's lack of color in the piece besides the gold in the stars at the bottom that show I can make it through my mourning. The middle panel shows how I am as I recover and move forward. My grandpa isn't shown as a sun anymore, but as an eclipse. And I, as the moon, as eclipsing the sun with the solar system symbolizing my family and friends with me. It is a piece I’m most proud of and it shows a lot of who I am as an artist.

Lastly, my self portrait bust (bottom right). The two contrasting sides show different parts of me. The patchwork side shows how I have been torn apart and put together again, the patchwork being different parts of my personality. The pop-art comic book side shows different comics that kept me moving forward in the harder times of my life and it encompasses who I am in the quotes from Captain America and Spider-Man and more. I try and put a piece of me into most things that I create. I love the freedom of ceramics, and I hope to keep creating things in the future.        -  Skyler Hamilton, Class of 2017

The program meets twice a month at Clinton Presbyterian Church.  For more information on Sunday Funday, visit the Clinton Presbyterian Church website or Facebook page.

Spike For A Cure
On Friday, March 24, 2017, students participated in the Spike for a Cure Volleyball Tournament, which raised $27,740 for the Jason P. Schaible Memorial Fund.

“It is a lot of work to organize this event, but completely worth it.  Everyone is having fun and it feels really good to raise over $27,000 for a great cause,” said senior Emily Russell, who spearheaded the organizing of Spike for a Cure along with girls’ volleyball head coach, Kirk Hissner.

Spike for a Cure is a round-robin volleyball tournament held every two years to raise money for a charity.  This year, over 700 students competed on 82 competitive and non-competitive teams, with members of the North Hunterdon High School girls’ volleyball team serving as referees.  This year, a team of staff members was part of the tournament, consisting of physical education teachers Chris Hrunka, Jared Mazzetta, William Krebs, Lauren Handel, Rebecca Schaefer and Sean Walsh.

Safety on Campus
Spring sports season is upon us, which can mean thousands of athletes and spectators on the North Hunterdon High School campus at any given time. Please read the following reminders regarding parking lot safety so that cars, buses, and emergency vehicles can move through our parking lots safely and without incident.
  • Parking in undesignated areas in the lots is prohibited.
  • Do not park on the road next to the softball field, hockey field, and visitor bleachers.  This has caused major traffic issues and must be avoided.
  • Parking in any fire lane is prohibited.
  • Do not park on the side of the ramp leading down to the District Office parking lot.  This has caused fender benders and has prevented buses from moving through to the bus lot.
  • Parking on the ramp to the Lion's Den parking lot is prohibited.  Parking in undesignated spots in the Lion's Den area prevents athletic buses from dropping off/picking up students.
  • No cars should idle around the circle on the Regional Road or Route 31 side.  Buses pick up and drop off students at any given time and have priority.
  • The speed limit is 5 mph at all times.
  • All vehicles on campus must yield to pedestrians and school buses.
  • Be courteous to the buses parked, unloading and loading students and equipment, entering and leaving the campus.

Reminder:  Pets on property-Dogs and other pets (except guide animals) are prohibited on school property.

We appreciate your assistance with keeping our students, visitors, and spectators safe while on campus.

Princeton Brass: Artist In Residence
The foundation was proud to fund an artist in residency grant on March 16th.  Musicians from the Princeton Symphonic Brass collaborated with North Hunterdon band students during the school day and then held a joint concert that night.  According to Mr. Vincent Angeline, North’s band director,
“This evening’s concert is an opportunity for students to hear and then perform alongside the Princeton Symphonic Brass in a concert setting.  This performance is the culmination of a daylong residency consisting of workshops, master classes, rehearsals and concerts.  Earlier today, members of the Princeton Symphonic Brass coached students to improve their musical capabilities, exposed students to music from different time periods, provided motivation to attain higher levels of performance and highlighted the role of music in their lives after high school . . . as a profession or more likely, as a lifelong passion for non-music majors.”

The concert featured a wide variety of music, which was showcased the quality and professionalism of the Princeton Symphonic Brass.  A highlight of the evening was the collaboration between the North Hunterdon students and the PSB members on “I’m a Believer". The audience was very appreciative of the musical talents on display.

Please like us on Facebook! We’ll post about grants being funded, upcoming offerings through our Career and College Resource Center, and general information about the foundation and it’s work at North.
