Yoga in PK1

Nothing is more important than knowing the tools to relax when necessary. A nice mat and a few animal-like stretches can help you calm down and find more energy to continue with your daily routine. Even when you are 3 years old, you may need some knowledge in yoga practice. It is fun and efficient!

"The gala on Saturday, March 25, was an enormous success with record attendance and a prodigious wave of support of the auctions and Fund-A-Need. Thanks to the gala proceeds, important campus enhancements will be completed over the summer, and the sports/athletics program will be strengthened as a result. Thanks to everyone who helped make the event such a grand success and thank you gala chairs Kyndra Leach and Erica Murphy and our extraordinary team of volunteers."

Spirit Week in Middle School

Pictured: Ms. Denis, Ms. Jacoway, Mr. Giot, Ms. Pailhes, Ms. Addo - Sonia - Lexine.

This year once more, from March 27 through March 31st, SDFAS celebrated "Spirit Week" in the middle school!
The agenda behind "Spirit Week" is to encourage students to wear a fun and funky array of clothes. And on Friday, all the elementary students were invited to join in the frenzy of Crazy Hair Day!

ÉDITO

Today, it's Earth Day at SDFAS, and we celebrate the incredible beauty, fragility and richness of our planet, our home, a small dot in an infinite universe. We educate our students on the challenges humans will have to address in the next decades, and how education, science, the capacity to adapt, understand and solve problems will be essential to the preservation of our eco-system and its amazing bio-diversity. Earth Day should be every day, every week, and of course, even though today some symbolic gestures will take place, students are learning all year long with their teachers how to understand and preserve our planet.

Some highlights for today:
The Middle School forum on Earth day starts with a Town Hall meeting focused on climate and environment literacy.  In Elementary, students do a campus clean-up at 8:15 a.m. In Maternelle, students have been doing a lot of gardening and are currently studying different species that are so important to preserve in our eco-system, such as snails, tadpoles, butterfly-caterpillars...

All school staff and students experience a paperless day and observe the Earth-hour with the electricity turned off, to remind us of the importance of preserving energy.
We wish to teach our students that they can make a difference, have a positive impact on the world, and later become change-makers and positive leaders, thanks to the education they receive today!

Christian Jarlov, Head of school

Chers parents,

SDFAS Donations to the Community
Les dons de SDFAS à la communauté

Pictured: Maya, Massin - Nathalie, Tahlia and Mireillle DesRosiers (Haïti Futur) - Sidonie, Alba.

On March 30, we welcomed at the Forum the representatives of three charities that our school will be supporting this year, thanks to the Jog-a-Thon. Each charity, gave a summary of the actions they conduct in order to help children: in San Diego for Monarch School, across the Mexican border for Corazon de Vida, and in Haïti for Haïti Futur.
Our students delegates have been learning and understanding the allocation of charity funds and each gave to one charity a check in the name of all students and adults involved in the jog-a-thon edition 2017.
The Groupe Humanitaire, chaired by Diesa Seidel, oversees those programs and remains in constant contact with the associations we support.
For Haïti, the school is starting a partnership, also called a "jumelage", with a small school located in a rural area of Haïti. Our donation is helping over 90 children return to school this year. Those children had left school following the hurricane, as their families were too poor and unable to pay their school fees.
All parents interested in joining the Groupe Humanitaire are welcomed! For all information about our initiatives, please contact Mrs. Seidel.

Spring Mini forum
Le mini Forum du printemps

Trois Escargots, by the Kindergarten B - Grande Section de Maternelle
Trois Escargots, by the Kindergarten B - Grande Section de Maternelle

This spring mini forum was all about animals:  the Kindergarten who are witnessing the birth of baby snails, sang a song, and had two presentations about snails.
The PK1 students mimed some crawling insects such as centipedes, snails and frogs wearing nice little headbands. They ended the forum with a song on how to draw a child, a PK1 fine motor skill.

2nd Grade Field Trip to Wild Willows Farm

Pictured: Giada, Mila and Carolyn.

The 2nd grade classes visited Wild Willows Farm in Imperial Beach on March 27th. There the students observed a variety of plants in a sensory garden. They had the opportunity to notice the different adaptations many plants had for survival. They picked vegetables and ate from the garden. Students even tasted flowers, leaves and succulents! We also learned the best ways to grow and acquire food in the most healthy way for both the consumer and the Earth. The students enjoyed this adventure and learned a lot. There are volunteer opportunities on Saturdays to help out and learn at the Wild Willows Farm if interested.
All you want to know about snails

Pictured: Snails and eggs.

If you have a chance to step in Kindergarten, you will be surprised to find a snail aquarium in each class. The students have to feed them, to observe their growing as part of the "Exploring the World" skill, "Take care and observe the development of an animal".
They now know what is good for them to be healthy. They took such good care of them that some of them were able to lay eggs, and soon we'll see some baby snails!
Students studied all the names of its body parts, and could even create a story about the life of a snail.
They observed the snail shell and got inspired and created beautiful art!

Witness a caterpillar turning into a chrysalis and a butterfly

Our PK0 and PK1 students have strange hosts in their class: some caterpillars arrived in the class as very tiny and fragile worms. After a week or two, they became huge fatty caterpillars. Most of them are about to build their chrysalis, and hopefully before the Spring break they will transform into nice butterflies.
At the same time, the PK0 will cut nice butterflies out of clay, and the PK1 students will get to glaze them. When dried and shiny, those handmade butterflies will be displayed on the wooden fence in the preschool playground, around the Butterfly house.
Let's discover what can grow and what cannot grow in PK1

Pictured: Jack and Emilie.

The PK1 students are now in the heart of the science curriculum: "Distinguish between living and nonliving things", "Discover the cycle of life of a vegetal: birth, growth, wilting, death".

When you are 3 years old, identifying what can grow and what cannot, can be tricky. In class, they tried to grow different items such as different types of beads, pasta, seeds... added water in their bowl and waited a few days. Soon they could witness what had grown and what had not grown. From there, they were able to fill out a chart and conclude that not everything can come to life and grow!

Technology in 4th Grade
La technologie en CM1

Students in fourth grade are learning about energy and forces in motion. They experimented with Hotwheels and put into action their understanding of potential and kinetic energy. The students worked together to measure and record the distance their cars traveled under different amounts of force using a data table that they will later place in a graph.
Under the helm of Mr. Giot (MS Math teacher) and Mr. Moncelet (5 th grade French teacher), 5 th and 6 th graders had the opportunity to perfect together their geometry knowledge and competencies on the Geogebra software! On April 3 and April 5, students worked in pairs (one 5 th grader, one 6 th grader), having fun using Geogebra. They developed their precision and rigor as they were drawing geometrical patterns, as well as put their communication and collaborative skills to good practice.
Thank you to Mr. Giot and Mr. Moncelet for this initiative!
Learn Math with the SDFAS 8th Grade MOOCs!

Mr. Giot has been leading a math project with the 8th graders for several months. The goal: to create MOOCs. This morning at Forum time, all MS students enjoyed a variety of student-made MOOCs based on a variety of math concepts: The Pythagore Theorem, the Thales Theorem, the Golden Ratio, the binary language or the Legend of Horus'eye. Using Stopmotion, Imovie or Viva Video, pairs of students presented their MOOC and checked the audience's knowledge with fun quizzes.
French Proficiency Exam in 8th Grade -DELF official examination

Every year, the opportunity to take the DELF (French Language Proficiency Diploma) is provided to SDFAS 8th grade students who are not-native French speakers.

The DELF is an official diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify a specific level of competency in the French language. Four skills are evaluated: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The DELF is also a great way to practice in an official testing situation, and focuses not only on language, but also on competencies, such as the ability to interact without any preparation in an unusual everyday life situation in communication.

18 students have taken the DELF B1 between April 3 and April 7, 2017, and they demonstrated strong language and competencies skills!
Community Service: what is it?

Year- round, the Video Journalism Elective gathers a group of Middle School students who produces the SDFASNews broadcasts that we all enjoy watching. In order to prepare for their most recent edition, students have compiled a survey on Community Service, which they disseminated to all MS students.
We are proud to share some answers, enjoy!

Audrey: "I was in charge of asking what "service" means. To summarize, "to help, to serve" means to give from your time, on a voluntary basis, in order to help people who might be in distress, or simply to be happy to help for the joy of helping.
The idea refers to taking actions, which will help the development of the community, and actions you do for others. I am doing it without asking for anything in return, you are helping without anyone begging you or paying you to do so."

Giulio: "The students had really interesting answers to share. Community service can have a very positive impact on the community. SDFAS students think that service can help get people closer, create new relationships, and share new perspectives and opinions. It will help in developing the community and benefiting the people who are part of that community. One student also said: it can help the people who are in need, such as poor people or people who do not get the benefit of an education. Finally, the idea is that the ultimate goal is to make the world a better place, with less pollution, and this way, make people happier."
Soccer Games!

The results of our last game were very good!
Our two teams from SDFAS, Junior Varsity and Varsity were playing against Nelson Middle Years.
The Junior Varsity team won 6/5.
The Varsity team won 3/2.
Next game scheduled, only for the varsity team, on Thursday 04/27 against Encinitas Country Day at SDFAS.

Go Stingrays !!
Varsity Girls Basketball

The Varsity Girls Basketball team played a tough game in their season opener against talented Nelson Middle Years. The team played with composure as they battled with a much taller Nelson Middle Years team. The team's pressure defense and focused offensive play gave SDFAS a 14-8 victory. The team is lead by 8th graders Adriana Telenti, Kimy Ghalie, and Valentina Du Roure.

Next game: Thursday, April 13 - 3:30 p.m. vs The Rhoades School
JV Girls Basketball

The Junior Varsity Girls Basketball team came out strong and focused, playing together to defeat Chabad Hebrew Day School 28-2. The tenacious defense of Lexine Arambulo and Chloe Gross kept the momentum up, setting the foundation for offensive points. Ellie Coalier dominated the boards, leading the teams in rebounds.
The team was lead by (7th graders) Nolwenn Garcia, Emma Berman, Lexine Arambulo, Chloe Gross, Ellie Coalier, (6th graders) Sofia Berman, Emilia Brachet, and Amaia Navarro.
