Torrance Chamber Hosts Dynamic Leadership Conference

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce had the distinct privilege of hosting 80 chamber executives and board members for a Leadership Conference this past Friday. The executives traveled from as far away as Oceanside to listen to keynote speaker, Dave Kilby, California Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.

“Attending the conference I was able to relate and learn from many of Kilby’s points as both a Chamber Board Member and a small business owner. Topics such as, ‘Do we have the right people on the bus’ and ‘What is our elevator speech’ prompted me to think about ways to improve my bakery and to be a better board member,” stated Kirk Rossberg, owner, Torrance Bakery.

Inspired Keynote from Coach Cori Close Highlights Women's Leadership Luncheon
Four dynamic local business leaders were honored at this week's 'Women's Leadership Luncheon' presented by the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce and Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center-Torrance.

Keynote speaker Cori Close, Head Women's Basketball Coach at UCLA, inspired the room with her words. Close's mission for the UCLA Women's Basketball program is translatable to one's business leadership strategy. "Seek to create an atmosphere that will create a life-long passion to succeed," she shared.
Close went on to state that "problems are great; confidence is built by conquering those difficulties...live with enough margins in life that you remain adaptable." Special thanks to all who joined this most-inspiring afternoon and especially to the event's corporate sponsors: Toyota Motor Sales USA, Pelican Products, UCLA Health, DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance-South Bay and Green Hills Memorial Park.

Job Killer Bills Continue to Advance in Senate

Senate policy committees this week continued to approve California Chamber of Commerce-opposed job killer bills.

The Senate Judiciary Committee passed SB 63 (Jackson; D-Santa Barbara), imposing a new maternity and paternity leave mandate.

The Senate Environmental Quality Committee approved SB 49 (de León; D-Los Angeles), which creates uncertainty and increases potential litigation regarding environmental standards.

CalChamber-Supported Prop. 65 Litigation Reform Passes Policy Committee

A California Chamber of Commerce-supported bill that improves transparency and reduces litigation costs in Proposition 65 cases against California businesses passed an Assembly policy committee last week.

AB 1583 (Chau; D-Monterey Park) won unanimous support from the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee.

Proposition 65 was designed to protect California’s drinking water from chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects, and to warn members of the public about the presence of those chemicals in their environment to help them avoid exposure. Since its enactment, Proposition 65 has helped protect the public by encouraging businesses to reformulate their products and to eliminate the use of listed chemicals.
