Digital innovation driving financial inclusion in the middle east
Digital innovation within the financial services industry is set to have world-wide benefits, and is likely to have the most meaningful impact on the unbanked populations of the world, according to Dr Nasser Saidi, a leading economist for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Middle East presents a unique opportunity for certain sectors of society to be empowered through financial access, particularly young and female populations. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy, Industry, and Mineral Resources Issues Request for Qualifications for Round 1 of the National Renewable Energy Program
The Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO), of Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources today launched its first requests for qualifications (RFQ) for the Kingdom's National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). The RFQ process for the NREP is open to any company (or consortium of companies) with the technical and financial capabilities to execute projects of this scale. [Read More]

CEBC Meets with Wisconsin Economic Development Coporation (WEDC)
A delegation from the WEDC met with CEBC during their recent visit to Dubai. Topics of discussion included the latest MENA region trends in industrial development, energy, and water. Working with CEBC, WEDC will play a key role in connecting Wisconsin consortia and companies to the region. CEBC urged WEDC to encourage Wisconsin clean energy companies and consortia such as the Midwest Energy Research Consortium and The Water Council
to come back to the region in order to participate in prominent clean energy events such as the 2017 Water, Energy, Environment Technology Exhibition (Oct 23 - 25 in Dubai) and the 2018 World Future Energy Summit (Jan 15 - 18 in Abu Dhabi. And in turn, WEDC invited CEBC members to attend upcoming Wisconsin clean energy events including the 2017 Water Leaders Summit (May 23-24 in Milwaukee, WI) and the 2017 WEFTEC Expo (Sep 30 - Oct 4 in Chicago, IL). Biofuels for aviation: Technology brief
Developing and promoting biofuels for aviation will be essential to reduce carbon emissions from commercial aviation. As a first step, some pioneering airports have already incorporated bio-jet fuel into their refuelling systems. Yet wider bio-jet adoption is constrained by high costs compared to fossil-based jet fuels. National Energy Roadmaps for Islands
Islands around the world face crucial energy challenges, including fuel import dependency, high electricity costs, environmental sensitivity and vulnerability to climate change. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) co-operates closely with island countries to accelerate their shift to renewables and help ensure a sustainable energy future.
National Energy Roadmaps for Islands outlines IRENA's roadmap methodology and highlights specific island case studies. Gulf Countries Move Toward Smarter Buildings
Buildings in the Gulf countries in the Middle East are on the road to being more intelligent, environmentally friendly and energy efficient, according to a Frost & Sullivan analyst. [Read More]  

Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power has agreed with the government of Jordan to develop, finance, construct, own and operate a new 61.3 megawatts photovoltaic project in Risha, a province in Eastern Jordan, the company announced on Monday. [Read More]  

Analysis by Frost & Sullivan shows that the market for energy performance contracting in the UAE was estimated to be US$80mn to US$100mn in 2015 and is expected to have a CAGR of 15-17 per cent in the next four to five years.   [Read More] 

MENA region forecasts over 5.7 GW of solar   
2016 was a record-breaking year for solar in the Middle East due to record low tariffs below $0.0245 per kilowatt hour (kWh) in September 2016. [Read More]

UAE eyes new clean energy generation target by 2030 
The UAE is looking to increase its target for power generation from clean energy to 30 per cent by 2030, the energy minister said yesterday. "What we knew is that at least 25 percent (of electricity) is going to be from both nuclear and solar," Suhail Al Mazrouei said after a ceremony to launch the third annual state of energy report. UAE to invest $163bn in renewable-energy projects
The United Arab Emirates has announced plans to invest $163bn in projects in a bid to generate almost half the country's power needs from renewable sources. The UAE is a top oil exported, but has taken steps to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels to generate power, including building nuclear facilities. [Read More] 
 
Abraaj acquires majority stake in Jhimpir Power
The Abraaj Group said it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a majority stake in Jhimpir Power, a clean energy generation company.JPL Holdings Pte. Ltd. wholly-owns a 50 MW wind power project in the Jhimpir wind corridor in Southeast Pakistan.  [Read More]

Jordan 'installing solar air conditioning units'
Jordan has become the fist developing nation to install solar-powered air conditioning units, according to press reports. The Jordan Times quoted Minister of Environment Yaseen Khayyat as saying that the project was "a first of its kind". [Read More]
