Whether you're American, Irish or Italian, whether your ancestors are Chinese or Cherokee, your family has an interesting heritage to share!! This is a great opportunity to showcase your family's background and to teach others in our NSS community about the many cultures represented at North Street School.
Each family should bring an international appetizer or main dish (for 10 people) that represents a heritage/culture (or any culture you may want to represent!) as admission to the festivities

March is NATIONAL READING MONTH!
To celebrate, NSS will be holding a grade-level reading contest, NSS LOVES TO READ, from Mar 1 - April 17.
Each student will keep a log of their daily reading, and submit it to their teacher to contribute to a class total. Class totals will be posted weekly on the bulletin board outside of the office. The winning class from each grade will receive a pizza party for lunch following April break - one winner per grade!
In addition, any student is encouraged to write a book review of book(s) that they have read for the contest and submit it to Mrs. Case or Mrs. Larkin in the Media Center. Students who submit a book review will win a special prize!

Food Allergies
Food Allergies are a growing health concern in this country and claim over 200 lives and cause countless emergency room visits each year, nationwide. As it has always been the policy at North Street School to make the safety and well-being of our students a top priority, we are taking action to raise awareness around this issue. Currently, there are 47 students with known food allergies in North Street School and this number continues to rise each year. Some students have such a high sensitivity that even a trace amount of the allergen can result in an anaphylactic reaction (a life threatening reaction requiring immediate medical attention). In addition, it has been found that 25% of first time allergic reactions to food occur in schools.
There are many ways we, the parents and children of the North Street School community, can help to keep food allergic children safe in and out of school. Hand sanitizer and wipes are NOT effective in removing food allergens. The best way to rid our skin of allergen proteins is by proper hand washing with soap and water lathering for at least 20 seconds. A helpful hint for children is to tell them to sing the "Happy Birthday" twice before rinsing and drying their hands It is imperative that we teach our children to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water before coming to school and prior to anytime they will be seeing a friend or classmate who has food allergies. Antibacterial wipes work well to remove food allergens also, but hand washing is always the preferred and recommended way. Stay tuned each week to learn more about what each of us can do to reduce the risk to children with food allergies.
