Through our train-the-trainer focus, this full-day workshop will equip attendees with the knowledge and skill sets necessary for cleaning, handling, and storing collections along with the tools to teach their volunteer base these critical skills.

The
Creativity Incubator
workshop series will encourage staff in museums to test out experimental interpretive approaches. As part of this hands-on experience, one lucky site will have their collections or permanent installations re-imagined by creative thinkers in the field and session participants. Three sites in the Hudson Valley are vying for this opportunity: Boscobel House & Gardens, Roosevelt-Vanderbilt NHS, and Southeast Museum.
The Creativity Incubator workshop series will be led by the Museum Mavericks, some of the most creative thinkers in the field today. In the Hudson Valley session, we are pleased to have Franklin Vagnone acting as the Museum Maverick.
The workshop morning session will feature Franklin challenging our perception of the museum experience-exploring why audiences should care and inviting them to step outside their routine scope of work and explore the core concepts of interactivity, engagement & relevancy. In the afternoon session, participants will explore the chosen site's collections, discovering the amazing stories they hold and creating new ones. The end goal of the program is to open our eyes to the possibilities and encourage museums to think more imaginatively about the interpretation of their collections and the visitor experience.
The workshop location will be one of three possible sites who are participating in a friendly competition to win the chance to be the host. The winner will be determined by an online voting poll.

Held at Locust Grove Estate in Poughkeepsie, this event is FREE and open to the public! We invite you to participate in the Heritage Fair with a table display, living history presentation or demonstration. Don't miss out on this chance to showcase your site to the Hudson Valley community!

Thank you for participating in the work of Humanities New York! Like you, I am dismayed by reports that the initial budget being proposed in D.C. calls for the elimination of the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities, among others. The NEH is the largest source of HNY's revenue and provides the funds for our popular grants program. Our second largest funding source is New York State, also crucially important to defend.
So we ask you to add your voice to the chorus of support for the NEH nationwide, and as a New Yorker, to defend the cultural identity of our state to our legislators.

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Preservation Assistance Grants help small and mid-sized institutions-such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, cultural organizations, town and county records offices, and colleges and universities-improve their ability to preserve and care for their significant humanities collections.

NYSCA/PLNYS Preservation Grants Available
Applications are now available to eligible municipalities and not-for-profit organizations to compete for 2017 Preserve New York and Technical Assistance Grants (TAG), signature grant programs of New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and Preservation League of New York State (PLNYS).
Guidelines for grants are posted on the League's website. Prospective applicants must discuss proposed projects with Preservation League staff before receiving an application.

rts historic structure reports, building condition reports, cultural landscape reports, and cultural resource surveys. Eligible projects may include but not be limited to: a historic structure report for a historic site; a building condition report for a local library; a cultural landscape report for an Olmsted-designed park; or a cultural resource survey of a downtown or residential neighborhood.

Technical Assistance Grants (TAG)
The Technical Assistance Grant (TAG)
program started in 2012 to support discrete projects that preserve New York State's cultural and historic resources. Not-for-profit arts/cultural groups and municipalities managing arts/cultural facilities are encouraged to apply. The applicant group may apply for short-term, standalone projects that advance the preservation of historic sites, museums, opera houses and theaters, arts facilities and other culturally important institutions that are located in historic buildings and structures that are open to the public. These professional studies include: building conditions surveys, engineering/structural analyses, feasibility/reuse studies and specialized building conservation studies. Preparation of architectural plans and specifications are not eligible. Grant amounts will not exceed $3,000 and the total cost of the applicant's project may not exceed $3,500. Each applicant must provide $500 toward the total project cost.

Hudson River Valley Greenway Grant Program
The program provides matching grants to Greenway Communities and Greenway Compact Communities. Greenway Communities are eligible to receive up to $10,000 for plans or projects consistent with the five Greenway criteria: natural and cultural resource protection, economic development, public access, regional planning, and heritage and environmental education.
The application deadline is May 5 and September 8 (applications must be postmarked or emailed by 4:00PM).

$1,500 Grants Available Now for Suffrage Plans
2017 marks 100 years since New York State signed woman's suffrage into law, three years before the US passed the 19th Amendment. This was a milestone for the state and a transformative moment in American democracy. Equal opportunity is as important a topic today as it was when Susan B. Anthony was arrested in Rochester for attempting to vote.
This historical moment is the perfect time to frame a statewide discussion about the social, professional and political equality of women-and by extension, all citizens-in New York State. Through dialogue about our shared history and our common future, the New York Women's Suffrage Centennial (The Centennial)
will produce a statewide conversation that celebrates the accomplishments of the past while helping us become a more just and equitable society for all.

The New York Landmarks Conservancy
Sacred Sites Grant Program
The Sacred Sites Program assists religious organizations with two statewide matching grant programs: Sacred Sites Grants and Sacred Sites Challenge grants. Congregations located in New York City are additionally eligible for our third grant program: Consulting Grants. Historic synagogues located in New York City's five boroughs are eligible for our fourth grant program: Jewish Heritage Fund Grants.

CLIR Grant Program Recordings at Risk
Will
Help Preserve Audio & Audiovisual Recordings
The Council on Library and Informatio
n Resources (CLIR) is now accepting applications for the pilot cycle of the Recordings at Risk Program, a national regranting program administered by CLIR to support the preservation of rare and unique audio recordings of high scholarly value in the US. Generously funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program will run four competitions from Jan 2017 to September 2018, and will award a total of $2.3 Million.
Open Competitions: Audio and/or Audiovisual Media
Deadlines: June 2017, December 2017, and May 2018
Following the initial competition for reformatting at NEDCC, CLIR will launch a series of three open competitions for audio and/or audiovisual digitization. Awards for the open competition will range from $10,000 to $50,000 and will cover costs of preservation reformatting for audio and/or audiovisual content by eligible institutions working independently or with qualified service providers.

NYSCA/GHHN Collections Needs Assessment Program Supplies Portal will Open April 1, 2017!
New Grant Opportunity!
Applicants who have consulted with an appropriate professional may request funds to purchase collections management supplies. Supplies may include, but are not limited to: storage boxes, acid-free tissue paper, artifact trays, dividers, UV filtering film, Tyvek sheeting, tape, tags, labels, and environmental monitors. Supply requests for archival or library collections will not be supported.
The program will offer awards of up to $750 per museum for relevant supplies requests on a first-come, first-served basis.
Application Deadlines
May 1 (Portal open April 1) and October 1 (Portal open September 1).

Call For Participation in the
4th Annual Hudson Valley Taste of History!
The Fourth Annual Hudson Valley Taste of History will take place in September and October 2017! Don't miss out on the chance for your site to be a part of it!
During two months in the autumn of 2017, several historic sites in Dutchess, Orange and Ulster Counties will offer tasty treats to visitors who come to learn and enjoy the history of our region.
In previous years, Taste of History participant organizations offered visitors a variety of tasty treats thematically connected to their site such as home baked corn bread, Dutch cookies, apple fritters, treats from vintage cook books, beer and wine tasting, Native American snacks as well as a bacon festival! Additionally, s
everal sites have partnered with local eateries and Bed & Breakfasts to offer tourists a special getaway.
Organizations, other than member sites of Mid-Hudson Historic Destinations, are welcome to participate. Sites may participate for one day, two days, or the full weekend.

Snead Commitment To Excellence Award
The Board of Trustees of Southeastern NY Library Resources Council has opened the nomination period for the 2017 award. This award is designed to recognize an outstanding member library, cultural heritage organization, program, service, or staff member. The Twila Snead Commitment to Excellence award is for members of SENYLRC, including individuals at any staffing level, organizations or programs created by member organizations.
Nominations will be accepted until April 7, 2017.

NYSA Student Research Awards Contest
The New York State Archives invites students to apply to the Student Research Awards Contest. The contest is open to all New York State students between grades 4-12 who use historical records in their research. The application deadline is July 1, 2017 and three awards will be presented in the fall of 2017.
All students must use historical records, as well as other primary and secondary sources, in their research. Projects must be nominated by teachers or administrators in the school attended by the student(s). Community members such as municipal historians and public librarians may also nominate students. Entries from home-schooled students are welcome.
