Chapter Spotlight

ANAC Chesapeake (Maryland) chapter leadership sent a letter to Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), member of the Senate Appropriations Committee advocating for continued NIH funded research. They described the tremendous impact that medical advances, borne out of NIH research have made in the lives of their patients and other people living with HIV. This letter was hand delivered to the US Capitol by members of the research workgroup of the Federal AIDS Policy Partnership, a national coalition to which ANAC belongs. Look for other chapter specific advocacy and policy efforts in 2017!
Global

World TB Day is March 24 This  annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis , the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB).  People living with HIV are more likely than others to become sick with TB. Worldwide, TB is one of the leading causes of death among people living with HIV globally;  more than 1,000 people with HIV die from TB every day. Health care workers are at an increased risk of acquiring TB compared to the  general  population. In low-resource, high TB burden settings, occupational acquired TB is a real threat to the nursing workforce.

Research

Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV/AIDS clinical research networks operating in the US and internationally. This includes ACTG, HVTN, HPTN, IMPAACT and other efforts. To facilitate dialogue on refining the HIV/AIDS clinical research enterprise, NIAID Division of AIDS Director Dr. Carl Dieffenbach (ANAC2016 keynote speaker) poses a series of questions for the community to consider. Read Dr. Dieffenbach's message. ANAC members are encouraged to submit comments and questions
